Kuhn disc mower

Anyone ever rebuilt the cutter bar on a kuhn cutter? I think it is a gmd66 or something like that has 6 spinners. It needs bearings. It actually runs now but one of the spinners hits the housing because of the play in it due to the bearing being bad i guess.

Rebuilding disc mowers is expensive. On the Kuhn each cutterhead is removed from the top and AFAIK repairs are pretty straightforward butthe parts, especially gears will be costly. The rest of the cutterheads will have to be removed and checked also. If you have to replace many gears it cheaper to but a new cutterbar and then you have the joy of possibly worrying about the gearbox. Great care must be taken to keep the cutterheads marked so they can be replaced and still be in time. If you don't already have it I would skip it.

Hey, Marvin, hope you got enough rain there in GA to keep Hotlanta happy. We are actually ahead for the year here in SC.

If there is a bad bearing in the cutterbar I think you can access it by removing the cutter head as I said above. Often bearing and seal problems are caused by getting twine wrapped tight under the blade carrier. Kuhn claims they have a shoulder machined in the assembly that is tight enough to keep twine out, but I don't know. If you have to replace a bearing you should check condition of the gear teeth, maybe on all the gears if you find a broken tooth. I'm not an expert but I have worked on them a little.

Actually on my kuhn you have to split the bar to get the top bearing out. I dont think you could ever pull it out from the top unless maybe you welded somthing to it with a slide hammer or somthing. But then again i am not sure. I have a cutter that is a different brand and i think you can get to those from the top.

Okay, here is what I used to do if the gears are good, take the disk off and pop the seal out of the bearing and take cutting torch and cut the race inside and out just enough to roll the balls out and then cut the race in half and pry it out on both bearings and all the slag falls down on the gear and clean it up real good and drive new bearing in also there is a o-ring around the shaft or something(been along time) be sure and replace it,check oil and run it a day and drain oil out and replace. I bought a 8' bushhog DM80 disc mower for 250.00 dollars at auction. Put all new seals and knives and ended up with a good mower for less then 900.00 dollars. I noticed on mine that twine was the main reason the seals were shot. On a bushhog the top bearing can be changed without seperating the cutter bar.

If this is a disc mower and not a mower conditioner, you are correct about having to split the cutterbar to repair virtually anything. The bolts that hold the quill and shaft assemblies come up through the bottom of the top half of the bar. Kuhn made the bars for New Holland disc mowers in the 80"s and I went to the factory training school to learn how to repair them. I still have the factory service manual they gave us there, and I referred to it religiously every time I had to work on one because there are very important thinks you need to know while you are assembling it to keep it from grenading itself when you run it afterwards. If you can send me an email, I can email you a scan of the manual. You will need it.

I would greatly appreciate a scanned copy of the manual if that was possible, many thanks

I would love a scan of that service manual if possible. My granddad has a Kuhn GMD 66 that he needs to replace a bearing but we can't find a manual...my email is [email protected]. Thanks in advance.

On the newer models with the shear hubs you can replace those hubs, the associated bearing and gear from the top without removing anything else. (The drive hub will obviously require a couple extra steps.) But any internal parts - idler gears or bearings - will require the cutter bar come out and be split.
