John Deere 2 bottom plows

What are the differences between a John Deere 412 2 bottom and a JD 415 2 bottom plow? I have found a plow, in good condition but cannot positively identify it by comparing with pictures I have found on the net. Would like to restore it to show with my JD 40S. Are both plows from the same production era? Any help will be appreciated, can get some pics up this weekend.

The 412 is the older plow. It will have solid standards that do not have the trip back mechanism. The 415 is newer and came with the trip back standards. The 412 is vintage correct for the 40 series tractors. The 415 would go with the 420 and 430 series tractors.

I have a 415A with the trip bottoms and landing lever. Really nice plow that does a great job. Like was said the 412 is what you are looking for to be "correct" but a 415 would still work plus give you the added safety, if you plan to plow, of the trip bottoms. If you do plan to plow unless you have flat ground or light soil be prepared to get some weights. Our 1010RS pulled the 415 but would slip a bit here and there with non flat, fairly light soil but with some rocks and no weights. The front end could get a bit light.

I bought what I thought was a 415A for my 420. After I did some research on it, I think now it is a Cat 1 model 45. I didn't know they made
a cat. 1 45 plow.

OKay!! Thanks to everybody--what I know I have now is the #412, since there are no trips. It's pretty rusty but restorable and should be correct for the 1953 JD40S tractor. All parts appear to be there except the adjustment lever. Doesn't look like it ever was. By the way, what does the #45 plow look like?
