If you get the 1409 - check over the rubber rolls.

I believe both machines can be converted to shear hubs.

What is wrong with the JD930?

Local ran a 1412 for years on 73 PTO HP.
Flails take less HP. I ran a 1411 on 82 PTO HP and it handled it fine, but you knew it was back there.

Tractor should be ok for the 1412 10' but in thick hay and hills it is a load. We traded our 1410 this spring for the new model 7???. This 9' model has a straight tongue. The 10' model has a bent tongue that might turn shorter.

As for the flails vs. Rollers I prefer the flails in grass. This is our third discbine and the flails have never caused any problems. Here in ky spring weather can be very difficult to get hay to dry down. The flails knock the wax layer off more surface area. Rollers crimp the stems every couple inches, ideal for leafy legumes.

If the 1412 is in good shape I would go for it. I would research the history and ask who the previous owner was and talk to him. If I had to buy anything new it would be this machine. Around here most guys run them until they are worn out and then trade (I.e. me). Good luck.
