bought a new to me 848 last year serial 819171 so later machine, if looking at baler from front my left chain is tighter than the other tight to where it doesnt ride on middle cam, right chain is looser rides on middle top cam, when open the tighter chain sits off the reset cam my 2+ inches looser basically rides on it, i have checked things like tooth skipping, link count, bent arms... all seems good, when looking at new chains i noticed both NH and shoup list 2 differnt chains as well as repair sections, when i called shoup they stated older serials use 228 links and 76 attachment links the newer serial uses 228 links and 57 attachment links, my baler has 3 links between bars so i am assuming its and older serial chain and also has older repair sections in some sections, my question is what is the real difference can one chain really wear that much faster, i dont know the history but it was well kept, indoors, clean, and bought from original owner, im on the verge of buying new chains but want to make sure im not missing anything, the previous owner did have issues at times of bars bending, but they are all strait now, any insight and help is appreciated, my old 846 was filling in until i was hit by a women texting while driving totalling it so now im down a baler and a tractor, and trying to get this new one right before i start using it thanks in advance

New chains is the only fix when one gets stretch more than the other.

With the tailgate open the new chains on mine don't touch until you start letting it down. Just order the chains based on your s/n. To replace them just open the tailgate all the way up and lock the cylinders and let the air out of the bags. You will have to remove every bar, go ahead and get some extra nuts and bolts Shoups has them too.

I have the same machine, prior owner must have always made lopsided bales. It will stretch the full side the most. The only way to fix it is replace the chains. I got mine from Shoups. Keep feeding the baler evenly. Also check all the roller bearings and bars while you have the chains off, I had to replace every bearing on mine. It cut my balers noise level by half.

Chains are on the drive sprockets the same on both sides?? If so you probably need new chains. Had the same problem on my 845.

another thing i didnt think about was checking the size of the rollers and to see if one had a bad bearing causing excess slack, few other questions
1 should the chain be tight as to not touch top cam or is it supposed to ride on that cam
2 what is the difference in the chains between early/late serials, seems like early bar every 3 links, late bar every 5 links
