Hi guys; I bought a New Holland rake model 258 without a dolly wheel brand new in 1995. Not sure how many acres it has been over, I have replaced one of the tooth bars a few years ago.Now today the second tooth bar broke, the bearings seem good.Any idea of why it keeps breaking them? It will break right where there are holes drilled that aren't being used for anything. Thank-You! Chris in Michigan.

I think it must be inertia from heavier , longer bars. Many used 258 and 260 rakes are all beat to pieces. You need to keep an eye on the bars and weld them up before they break in half. 258 rakes also get a twist in the frame from rough use/ground.

The NH 258 rake is a 9 foot rake. The bars are longer but the same size as the 256. So the bars are weaker. Just raking heavy hay puts a lot of pressure on the bars. So the longer bar can fail after time due to fatigue. I have welded them and put a reinforcement in the bar. They have held so far. I had a piece of bar stock they just fit inside the round tube.

258 bars are bigger diameter than 56 and 256. Tine mountbolts are 1/4" longer and rubber mount teeth have a wider mount and different part number.

Did not realize that the NH 258 had larger diameter bars than the NH 256.

Not familuar with the parallel bar rakes, just with the 45 degree angle real type. on those the bars a 1" solid steel shaft fits inside. A 1" od tube works as well but does not have the strength I feel is needed. I have repaired many a rake that way, it is usually in where a bearing runs on the bar so I take and cut out a section where it wore to point it broke and take a section from anouther busted bar and put in and go 2 teeth bolt holes beyond each splice of bar, used to try to also weld bar but don't bother with that any more. I have rebuilt so many of that type of rake in the steel wheel models that I have lost count of how many I did do but it is in the dozens. Have 4 setting here right now to do. When done they will all go directly to dealers lot for sale. Always looking for rakes to rebuild.

Mostly within hauling distance from Wapakoneta, Ohio But top choice right now is the New Idea No. 4 4 bar rake-tedder, Then the 3 bar New Idea is good but not as desireable as the 4 bar. Them any McCormick 4 bar rake or 3 bar rake-tedder, then John Deere 4 or 3 bar followed up by Case No. 170 4 bar. Even some models of Massey Harris as some parts interchange from the McCormick rakes. They all go to the Amish for use.
