New Holland knotter rebuild questions

I"m currently rebuilding the knotters on my NH 68 square baler. The bronze rollers on the knife arms were worn out. I took a carbide bit and just cut enough of the metal off where it had been bradded over, to remove the roller. Is it ok to just take a welder and weld enough to the end to where the roller can"t slide off? Or should I put a small washer on and weld to it? Everybody said to get the bill hooks that had the brass roller for sisal twine. Messicks shows the steel roller bill hook only now. Will this cause any issues? Any other tips or suggestions on rebuilding these? Thanks for all your help.

There is a more modern style that has a bolt on roller IIRC. On my 68 I replaced one of the balls pretty much like you palnned only I just peened the remaining end over enough to hold. Been working for 10 years like that.

There are two types of arm when it comes to rollers, bolt on and weld on. I have one of each on my machine. On the weld-on side I put a little washer over the roller that rests on the shoulder and tacked that onto the arm. I figured there'd be less chance of binding with a smooth surface for the roller to ride against. Reality is it probably makes little difference.

Good topic! I'm wondering if you can get just the brass or metal rollers/balls without buying the whole arm? My 67 has flat spots on the rollers and it will miss tie. thanks. Jim

Yes, absolutely you can. Pull the arm out of the knotter frame and take a good look at what holds the brass roller on the shaft. If it's hex key bolt, you can try and heat it up to back it out. Often times it's easier just to grind it off and tack on a washer to hold it. Either way is acceptable.
Those arms are awfully spendy to replace without a real need!

For the knife arm roller it"s New Holland number 146. Just get them for a 278 New Holland baler. I got them installed on mine. I put a hardened washer on mine and tacked it in place. Seems to work good so far.
