My Case/IH 8430 baler is getting hay wrapped on an upper roller when starting a new bale. Not every time, but far too often. I got the baler used last year and made about 130 bales, and it wrapped the roller maybe twice. This year, it is doing it much more often, and more than once (like this afternoon), I've given up and finished a field with my small square baler. What's different this year is I'm about 5 weeks behind because of the most rainy season I've ever seen. The rain plus the extra time seems to have favored the growth of the finer grasses that grow between the main grasses, so overall the hay is finer. Also, the tractor I used last year blew a piston, so I'm baling with a 1959 Farmall 560 this year.

Does anyone have any experience with these balers? What could be wrong? My bad shoulders can't take much more of cutting hay off the roller, you've got to be a contortionist.

Thanks.

I have a Hesston 5530, which is the grand-daddy of your IH. It's damp or wet hay that is short, that most often gets wrapped on the top roller. Don't know the cure, other than bale dry hay, specially 2nd cutting!

Thanks for the replies. So it sounds like the baler is finicky about the crop. I'm not too surprised, the fields I had trouble in were ones that also gave my sickle bar fits when mowing. The grass would stop the bar dead. I've never had a year like this.

We had one of those balers, had problems with it plugging often but in long hay late in the season if would wrap in that area when trying to get a bale started. If I noticed some wrapping I think we would tie and dump and close the door without tensioning the belts and reach in through the slack belts to unwrap/cut before it broke anything.

I have a 530 Hesston baler which I believe is the same or similar to your baler. It's been doing the same thing this year. It only seemed to do it in patches of canary grass that were tough in the bottom. I think that was the problem. The amish I was baling for also had it raked into wads, so that didn't help. If it wasn't wrapping on the upper roll it would wrap on the square tube and pop the chain. I got out of that field and it didn't bother again.

If you are popping chains you most likely have wet hay!
