I finished mowing alfalfa/OG today and it was really thick. And also a little wet at the bottom from an inch of rain Sat night. Here is one of the worst worn guards. There are probably 8-10 like this. One neighbor says it is toast. Another says as long as you adjust the guard so that there is about .035 between ledger and section the gap is not important. So I had zero problems today with these guards, Re-place or not?

Even if you grind them, they will not stay sharp long as the heat treat is not very deep.

The bottom cutting edge is rounded over.

Would you be happy with a scissors if one side looked like that?

Can dress up with a grinder to give it a sharp edge again, or replace.

If its working for you in the alfalfa, then its working.

But you won't get far in fine grass.

For alfalfa, you're fine. If you have any fine grasses, you're sunk. We need to replace some on our machine we run in grass because it has issues now & then.

If it is cutting good I wouldn't worry about it.

They look pretty well spent to me... That said, you could probably use a flap disc on a grinder to clean the cutting edge on the guard... straighten and flatten it. That is critical... as is the ledger adjustment. If you can get that with a sharp edge on the guard it should cut. Getting that will be the trick... and you might find you're just as far ahead to change the guards.
The only guys around here that ever got much done with haybines had a simple philosophy... change the scythe and guards before you start cutting. Every year. Keep the old for spares. They could come close to running with a discbine. Everyone else I've ever seen... more or less suffered along with the thing plugging up... back up... try again. Cutterbar maintenance is of great importance...

If in doubt, put new ones on. Your old ones look junk to me. Probably would cut more alfalfa, but if you go to cut grass, you will want new guards. I just got done replacing the guards on my double bar Kosch.

Replace....the ledger plate sides need to have a sharp edge so it will cut properly. When the ledger plate sides are rounded it's like trying to cut with a pair of scissors that have rounded cutting edges. It will work but not very well.

I have ground the sides to give a somewhat new cutting edge if not too badly worn. Just hit them with a hi speed grinder.
