I saw one advertised, a 670 dolley rake. Is it a good rake? All I see around here are new holland rakes. Is there any big difference; is new holland any better overall ? Thanks, Mark

Is the 670 a 10 ft and the 640 8 ft ? I also saw a 640 dolley rake for sale. Are they both 5 bar ? Thanks, Mark

The John Deere 640 hay rake can set up as either a 4 or 5 bar rake.

The distance between the outside rake tooth on each end of the bar is 8 feet.

The dolly wheel makes it easier to make turns at the end of the wind row.

You can not back the dolly wheel rake with the tractor; you can manually steer it with the tongue either forward or backward.

Once the rake is set up correctly for your field(s), it requires little maintenance.

The JD 640 hay rake meets our needs and works just fine for our small farm.

The 670 rake is a newer model rake than the 640/660. The JD rakes where a little higher priced than the NH rakes so more NH rakes sold in areas. I think the frames are a little heavier on the JD rake. I also like the single dolly wheel over the two wheel NH dolly wheel.

If it is priced in your budget go get it. You will like the job it does.

I have been running a 670 for probably twelve years. I have tried out rotaries twice but stay with the 670 with dolly wheel because with the irregular shape of my fields, I have a lot of centers and it does better in the tight turns. One bit of advice is to keep after the bolts that go through the frame rails into the pivot block at the front or they will egg out and the front will tip. PO of mine had let it get pretty bad.

I have used JD 600 series rakes for the past 30 years, having had 4 or 5. Most were worn out when I got them but "kept on truckin". Around here they run about $1500 from a used equip dealer. I prefer them to the wheel rakes......however, in all honesty I only used wheels that had 4 and where 3 pt mounted. If you have the larger ones that had dual booms, tires, and were drag type that could be a different story. TX. Jim could advise you on that. I'm not that big of an operator.

On length, I'd go with a 9' over a 7'. Having had both the 7 just doesn't cover enough area. I don't know how the numbers correspond to the width and the width is pretty much the length of the rake assembly overall.
