We have an Oliver plow whose frame is set for 16" furrows, but I just discovered it has 14" (R419-14) moldboards. We bought it this way years ago. The plow performs fine and the field looks just like anyone else's. Would there be a desired effect from using the shorter moldboards like using a shorter or longer share? Or was the owner too frugal to buy larger moldboards when he decided to change a 14 to a 16? There's 5 of them you know--it may have cost $100 total in 1974! We probably won't wear them out at this point so I'm not even sure if I should bother asking which boards to purchase at replacement time--if one breaks I'd be inclined to replace with 14, stick with what works.

Oliver made adjustable frames that could be set for 12", 14" or 16" and it probably was set for 14" when new but somebody down the line decided to change it to the 16" setting for a bit more trash clearance and also so it would cover an aditional 10" per pass across the ground. Our Oliver was a 3 point 3 bottom and set on 16" when we got it and when had to get a different moldboard discouvered it took a 14". As long as you did not try to run the 8" the 16" bottom is designed for but stay with the 7" deep the 14" is designed fopr it will work just fine.

I don't know about Oliver plows but this could be ordered as an option on Deere plows (14" bottoms on a 16" frame). The thinking was it would reduce draft in heavy conditions. I can't imagine it would make a lot of difference but that was the idea. Mike

Is it possible when they were changed to a 14 rather than a 16. Did the dealer say "well mtoday we plow faster, because the newer tractors have more power, you can get by with a 14 rather than the origanal 16? Just my thoughts.ggp

I have a 14 inch IH #8 with 12 inch moldboards(they are in great shape!!!),I haven't used it yet,so I want to see what everybody has to say.I guess maybe we are both too worried about that 2 inches not getting plowed!!!!! !!

I have seen lots of 16" plow parts on 14" E-series Case plows from the 50's. You can still get the 16" parts, but the parts that fit the more common 14" bottoms were used up long ago.
Depending on the design of the plow, a one size up, or down, moldboard will probably work just fine, as long as it fits and the dirt is not falling over the top or flopping back down in the furrow (both with the smaller size). A one size up or down share will probably work also. You just have to adjust your speed and depth to aviod the above problems. However, if you want the optimum balance of performance and cost, stick with original. Of course, it dosen't really matter on a plow day how efficient your rig is, unless you have to follow behind the guy that is making the mess.
