Bought this JD running gear to get the gravity box that was on it. Put the gravity box on a 6 ton EZ Trail with better (and wider) tires, so I'll be listing this one for sale shortly. Anyone know what model it is? Only marking I've found on it is the JD emblem on the rear axle. Guessing it's a 6 ton? Thanks for any info.

I recently purchased a running gear like this. It is leaking grease out of the seal on the back side of the passenger front tire. Doesn't appear to be a grease fitting for that. Does the dust cap just knock off or something different? And, can you still get seals for those?
Thanks,

Cory

963 it is, then. Thanks for your help. Leroy - I'm in n/w WI (Ladysmith). If that's close enough, or if it can hitch a ride with someone on the hauling schedule, let me know. Email is open.

I am a thinking North west Wisconsin is just a bit far from northwest Ohio where I am at and Northeast Indiana where the person that I think would have been interested lives. Thanks

It's a 963...those half loops of metal welded to the top of the front and rear axle beams gives it away. It was meant for use with leaf spring bolsters to keep them from rocking too far one way and as bottom out bumpers. The 953 never had them.

963 and that broken/missing bolster stake can still be replaced with a new one from Deere. Fixed one of mine this spring.

i'd call it a 953. i have 2 under gravity boxes, more under hay wagons. best trailing wagons ever built, just narrower tread than newer wagons.

I've had both a 953 and a 963 and the bolster supports on yours are a 963. I have a 953 operator's manual which also shows a different bolster support than yours. I'd call yours a 963.

Either a 953 or 963 gear. Is the channel of the tonge reineforced on the bottom side, could be changed but that is one of the easier ways to tell. Reineforced a 963 and a 5 ton gear, no reinforching 953 and a 4 ton gear. Either way the best models built by John Deere, Where are you located, have people that might be interested if not too far away. It is a later version of one of these 2 models with the new style grease caps on the wheels. Looks like someone has been working on the piviot bolt to raise and lower the tongue.

Thanks. We've pretty much always had German shepherds. This one is Heidi. She's 19 months old and good with the kids and pretty decent help with the cows, too. This picture is the day Luke and I brought her home. I let him pick her out of the litter and name her. Did good. :)
