Wondering about trash clearence....

I was reading up a bit on IH plows & found out the Little Genius #8 tractor plow with 14" bottoms has 22" between the underside of the beam & the tip of the share. The fore & aft spacing of the bottoms is 21". The #70 from IH has 27" between the beam & share & 24" fore & aft between the bottoms. The little adding machine made some noise in my head & I didn't come across any large numbers. So, is the difference of 5" & 3" respectively really going to let the trash pour through? I'm not really seeing much of an improvment with the comparison, here. Apparently the advertising department for IH back in '59 didn't dwell much upon it either as there is no reference made to any improvment in clearence over the #15 & #16, or any of the older tractor plows that preceded them, in the 1960 catalog.

I'm also curious about how well a Farmall Cub is going to do in corn stubble. Just found a plow for my Cub & would like to use it to plow down the sweet corn stubble after I take off the stalks with the forage harvester. Don't know how much of a mess the chopper will leave behind, never used it in corn before.

Also, there was mention about trash or corn springs that press the stalks down in front of the coulter in my last post about tillage. Would anyone have a picture of that setup?

While I'm thinking of it, are or were there trash plates made to fit the HA1 or GA1 bottom on the Little Genius plow? I know they made them for the Super Chief bottoms, but I don't know the compatability between the two.

Again, thank you all for your insights on my last post about plows & providing me with a variety of options. In the next week or so, I'm venturing out to go look at a Little Genius with 4-14". Not really planning on buying, just using it as a starting point for my plow shopping adventure.

Mike

Crazy Red,
I feel you are over-thinking this trash thing. You can measure and measure and still not get the results you want without actually plowing. The picture of the "trash hooks" gives you an idea....cut #9 wire about 6-8 ft long, tie one end around the coulter arm and let the wire trail behind (for each moldboard). As you plow the wire does an amazing job of helping trash flow thru and even helps in covering more trash. My #8 is not the best plow for trash clearance. The #16 plow gives you a lot more clearance for stalks. You can try sharpening the coulters also. The coulters cut stalks best when they are not set too deep....too deep and the coulter hits the trash at a 90 degree angle and then often just pushes the trash...if the coulter can hit the trash at about a 45 degree angle (and coulter is sharp) the trash is more likely to be cut.
Plowing today's stalks (new hybrids have stalks that decompose very slowly) is a trial that can induce excessive cuss words....so much so you go from an amateur to a pro.
You came into my display area at the Badger Steam & Gas Show a couple years ago...if you have my email please contact me. I'm the old codger you talked to. I plowed in the early 1950s with an H and a #8 for many a day and night and enjoyed every minute of it. I now plow in our "plow day" and it is a great enjoyment.

I scanned it from "Better plowing with moldboard plows".

You can most likely adapt TSC Cover Boards to about any Rt-Hand Plow..

A good piece of #9 wire, attached to the Coulter pivot and about 4 or 5' long..allowed to drag, will help guide trash through your plow..

Your Coulters need to be set fairly low and the Fodder should be fairly dry.. Jointers can be a problem sometimes.

We used JD #44 and 52 2x14" plows and didn't have a lot of trouble with plugging..maybe once every-other round in a 15 acre field.. Ron..

IIRC the 720 had 30" of vertical clearance and that was the first plow I ever used that handled cornstalks the way a plow should. 710 might have been 27" and after I put a set of concave coulters on it it would plow right along with the 720, but not before.

I could measure my 720, but remember it as 36 inches, 710 as 33, 700 as 30. My 720 and White 548 are the same.

I'd much rather have a 3-16 over a 4-14 for stalk clearance.

Was sure nice going from the 4-16 to the 4-18 plow. Granted there was additional clearance in beam hieght and distance between the bottoms, but.... I can plow untoughed cornstalks 3 out of 4 years now. Well, I should say my wife can.

Wider bottoms sure helps a lot.
