Corn head grease in a new gearbox??`

I fried the gearbox on my rotary cutter and I am just going to order a new one because the parts I need cost almost as much as the whole unit.
The bottom seal had allowed the gearbox to drain and I did not catch it until too late, I thought it was noisier than usual but I have gotten to the point that I wear hearing protection and did not catch it in time. (Expensive lesson, my Dad always told me grease and oil are cheaper than metal)
So the question is would you put cornhead grease in a new gearbox?
How do i tell if i get enough in it?
Or should i just chalk this up to being too lazy to check the oil or pay attention to the noise and put recommended oil in it AND CHECK IT EVERY TME I USE IT!!!

I wouldn't. Someone posted that cotton picker or stripper spindle grease is a little thinner than corn head grease which is a NLGI #0. Claimed spindle grease turns liquid when "worked" and resolidifies when motion ceases. Sounds good and might consider it in a new gear box that was prone to seal failure and tough to check.

I have a Woods 6' bush hog that leaks any oil out the bottom seal, but have been taking the cover off and filling it with regular gun grease for years with no problem.

i did that on a replacement gearbox for my post hole auger...cornhead grease i got from JD is similar to STP oil treatment...its liquid but very thick.
i've also run tube grease in shredder/mower boxes for years with nary a problem.

Someone on here (can't remember who) said that they replaced the factory oil with STP in all of their bush hog gearboxes.

I filed that away in my little memory in case I ever own one that won't leak so badly that it will hold STP.

Corn head grease will work fine if it has the EP additive in it. The best thing is EP-00 grease. Rhino uses this OEM in most of their gear boxes now.

I do a lot of hoggin in some prettty trashy areas and I run JD cornhead grease even though the seals on my bushhogs are good. If you damage an output shaft seal, it wouldn't take long before the 90w oil to run out and damage the whole gearbox. I would run the cornhead grease to give yourself a little safety factor. :)
