336 JD wire baler problems

Had the wear strips replaced and the baler gone through the dealer shop last fall. I don't use it much, baled 200 bales a month ago and pulled it out to bale some for a landlord today. Wire boxes were empty, replaced wire and routed correctly (I checked 3 times), now when it trips to tie the needles don't return all the way to the home position but stay in the chamber and throw the saftey stop. Cleaned all the hay out of the baler and turned everything over by hand got it to tie and then started the baler and went into hay and promptly broke the shear pin and found the needles in the chamber agian. Thoughts please?

Sounds like the trip roller inside the drive gear for the needles is dropping out of drive. There is a spring associated with the drive roller. Is it broken? The spring causes the roller to engage the gear and keep driving until it gets home.

Have you checked to be sure needle brake is tight enough? Just because the brake springs are mashed doesn't indicate brake tightness. Look at the pads for wear. Tying system could be tripping to tie and needles going into chamber too quick(not being pulled in) and sharing bolt. Where is the arm(parts key #1) pointing(3 or 9 o'clock) when shear bolt goes??

The trip dog spring(E39059) or trip dog that Roger mentioned is a possibility but I don't remember one ever failing on a baler I've worked on.

Just as I thought. needle brake not holding needle frame in home position when tying system trips. Tighten or replace needle brake pads.

I was going to respond last nite when the internet feed went down. Make sure the brake is working properly, stopping the knotter at the proper position. Also that the needle carrage is returning fully to park position. Related, as knotter drives needle carrage. If the stop-safety mechanism is operating properly, the plunger should be slammed to a stop, breaking shear bolt on flywheel before damage happens to needles. Went thru that with a friend's JD 24W last fall at the steam show. An adjustment on the brake, and he was good to go. I advised to replace pads, and disk, however, as disk was badly pitted where brake was parked. Check timing on chain that drives knotter mechanism.

I had a similar problem on my 336 twine. The lower tension rail rusted thru at the bolt and dropped down, keeping the needles from re-setting 100%. Look underneath the baler to see if the needles are being held too low.

(quoted from post at 20:36:40 06/27/12) Check timing on chain that drives knotter mechanism.

336 has no knotter drive chain because it utilizes gears. Later JD balers after 24T & 224 only have 2 chains, the main drive at the front and feeder fork chain.
