Deere VanBrunt Drill

Picked this up today. Boxes andd gears seem in good shape. ANybody have the settings for oats peas rye and radishes? No decals under the lids. Also wondering about clover in the small seed box. Is it better to let the clover seed drop infront of the disks and get covered by teh chains or drop in the discs through a tube?

Looks like you picked up a winner. Dear ole mother
or father deere should have decals to replace. Or if
you get a good picture some young computer guru
could produce them for you.
Clover seed or grass seed should drop and be covered
by the chains. You don't want it too deep, and
dropping down the tubes would do that. happy
seeding.

Here's a shot of the chart on the lid of my seed box. I think you can read it if you blow it up a little. If not, let me know and I'll check it out tomorrow. I also have a pretty good fertilizer chart if you'd like a picture of it. Mark

What matters the most is condition of the seed doors, and the drop tubes being there, and in place. Next is the diameter of the discs. I would recommend getting the manual, if you have never operated these type drills. Golden rule is NEVER leave seed, or fertilizer in the box, over night! Shop vacs make nightly clean up a breeze!

Thanks Mark, I would like to pick you brain about restoring my drill, sounds like you have some good experience. I saw a video on the qdma site of you using your drill. I'd appreciate the trip clutch diagram pdf, also the discussion on teh top right of your photo about the seed gates, can you see those from teh top?

99.9% of the time you wouldnt want seed dropped in front of the discs simply because it would be buried to deep..really small seed needs to be planted very shallow.

To get to the seed gates, go around to the back of the drill. The gates are at the bottom of the feed cups. You"ll have to remove the top tube assembly to get to the gates. Go to pages 16 & 17 of the FB PDF. Part key #37 is the top tube assembly. Part key #13 is the feed cup, #12 is the gate with latch and pin, and #49 is the whole assembly of both. Most all of the drills I've messed with, have had grain left in them at one time or another, resulting in the gates rusted in place or rusted out entirely. If it's gone, grain will spill out even if the drive isn't engaged. I cut a small piece of thin gauge steel and JB weld into place to match the rest of the cups. The drill i currently have, has all the gates in the full up postion, as shown in the farthest left picture of the chart. It works great for wheat, rye, buckwheat, and smaller seeds. If I need to plant larger seed, I plant with a 2 row JD 70 Flexi Planter. I can space it as narrow as 14" rows. Holler back, or email if you need more help. They're somewhat of a bugger to figure out at first, but after that they're a piece of cake. A 62 year old piece of cake, Mark

Why not? I can almost bet our van brunt drill still has some seed in it from last year. Always shed kept and never a problem. We'll still suck it out come spring, but just about every year it gets backed in with a trace of seed left, and most years nothing is ever done about it. No troubles either.

If I'm not mistaken the drill of MattCatlin's is a model "B" not "FB". Seed gates are accessed in the front not the rear. It appears to have seed boxes only with small seed attachment in the front. Part # for seed gates is BB921M.

Matt, I have the same drill as you have pictured, but have a problem planting really shallow. I have removed the holders for the disk springs so they will float. Other than that I do not how to correct! Any help would be appreciated.

If your drill has the hand cranks up by the hitch clevis all you need to do to change seed deep is crank the handles the correct rotations.
