Ford 501 sickle advise

I use a 501 sickle with a 7 foot cutting bar. I use this with my Workmaster.
The blue sickle behind the Workmaster is one a restored. I was given a 501 and it was a rust bucket.

Things I would look for are:

1. Belt and bearing. Can you turn the sickle bar back and forth by pulling on the pulley?
2. The ball cup at the end of the pitman can look good, but be worn out and not hold when cutting hay. I ran into this and replace the cup with a John Deer cup. Work well. Make sure all the clamps are there to attach to lift arms.

This is the site on how to attach a 501 sickle. It is important and will save you lots of time.

If I remember right the 501 was a pit-man type sickle mower and the 515 is a full pulley drive type. I have bits and pieces of both laying around. Reason I have them is the cost to rep[air some of the parts like replacing the bearing pack is way more then the mower is worth. As for should you be able to turn the pulley by hand to make the sickle move that is a yes no and maybe all depends on how tight things are and what might be wrong. Now if you can not turn it with say a pipe wrench on the PTO shaft then you got big problems
