i have a 504 superI thats a pretty good ole roller the only problem i have is when i start into a windrow bout 1/3 ther time i stop up the pick-up opening now heres the question does the belts supposed to turn when the pto is engaged? mine dont turn untill there is some hay build up in the chamber my vermeer dealer tells me this is normal for this model but it just dont seem right to me in very long hay like greengraze or johnson grass some time i actualy have to walk behind the roller and pull down on the belts while someone drives forward to start the bale forming after that i think you could bale briko-blocks with it

It sounds like you should send that thing to the junk yard before you end up with your arms wrapped around the belts and sucked into the bale chamber. That would be totally dangerous to operate a machine that don't work. I am surprised about what your dealer told you.

only does this when in real tall grass normal stuff you cant beat the old roller but thank you for your comments twards my safety where most helpful

The belts are supposed to be turning even when empty. Your belts are either too long or the tension springs are not adjusted right. The only time the belts will stop is when you open the gate to dump a bale. They should start to turn just before the gate latches. That is to pull the belts in the baler so they don"t get caught in the door as it latches.

When the chamber is empty there is some tenison on the belts. With it opened up and safety blocks in place spin rollers by hand and see if they are all free.

First you need to clean out the spring coils on the belt tension springs. This will shorten the springs back to the original length. Then if needed you need to set your start tension. Likely your dealers did not tell you how to advance the pickup timing. That can be done in 2 min.

What JD seller said. Shortening the belts will probably solve problem. As a temporary fix, you might try spray belt dressing.
