Ford 909 cutter PTO shaft

I just bought a 909 rotary mower, and the PTO shaft is too long. I've read
where you should cut equal lengths off both implement and PTO shafts, but the PTO shaft seems to be the one designed to be cut. It has the rectangular section running the entire length while the implement shaft only has a short rectangular receiver.

I need to hack at least 6 inches off, so is there any reason I can't shorten only the PTO shaft? Is there a problem with it being too short? Any other advice appreciated.

Thanks,
JK.

I did just that about 25yrs ago on my 951
Ford. Cut the square end that slides into outer shaft. Absolutly no problems in all this time.

Thanks Kevin. Your reply makes me think our cutters have different PTO shaft designs. Mine has two pieces, both with female ends of 1 X 1 1/8 which share a solid piece of shafting. The solid shaft appears to fit all the way into the u-joint yoke of the tractor end of PTO shaft. What I left out before was that the solid shafting is missing and I have to get a piece of it.

There is no way I can cut the implement end of the shaft because there's just a short piece at the end with the 1 X 1 1/8 opening. I would have to cut the
tractor end of the shaft with the square rectangular tubing. Is this what you meant?

Yea mine is different. Mine has square shaft witch slides into a female square. icut the male end off and ithas plenty of slide as it only moves maybe 6 inches at most when cutter is lifted by 3 pt.

That is exactly what I'm going to do. I'm going to get a 1 X 1-1/8 shaft welded to a 14N yoke to replace the implement end. If I cut that shaft to proper length, it should slide into the female end and allow for movement. I think it should be as strong or stronger than manufactured PTO shafts.

Thanks for responding. It's reassuring to know this solution works for you.
