315 New Holland

I am looking for the good, bad, and ugly on this baler. i just picked one up and if it works i buy it if it doesnt i take it back. im not familiar with this baler or the new holland line in general. i have only used john deere 14t and massey #12. so this is a little newer. it has the hydraulic tensioner and hydraulic lift on the pickup. would like to test it out on a unrolled straw bale today but it doesnt look like mother nature will let that happen. Any thing you can tell me about these balers would be appreciated. TIA have a good one

A well-kept 315 will bale a lot of hay. A wornout, ill-maintaind 315 won't be any better than any other wornout, ill-maintained square baler. Few if any differences between a 315 and 316, and there are a bunch of 315's and 316's out there still earning their keep.
They are in the middle of the lineup capacity-wise (in their day) and very similar to today's NH BC5050.

Farmer I've worked for on/off over the last several years has a late model 315, was kind of a well kept one owner, to replace a worn out IH he had. Condition is important, like was mentioned. From the little I know about them, thrower belts, faulty or substandard twine(which has no affinity to any model or brand anyway!) and or the wagon hitch that broke in a very inconvenient place on a slope, was all I have seen. It would make me want to take a look at that pipe/hitch etc. That and the knives being kept sharp or replaced, he mostly round bales, but has done a few thousand a year with the 315, it takes a nice size windrow, I've raked some nice ones for it to bale, performance wise, I'd own one if in decent shape.

I bought one; which was a major upgrade from a 270. Quite a bit heavier, & required several more horsepower than the 270. I liked putting a baler behind a JD 60. Wasnt able to do that any more with the 315. NH recomends 40 PTO HP minimum. If You plan to pull a wagon or do high speed baling. I wouldnt want any less than 60 HP. I think better than the JD 14T, dont know about MF balers; I dont even remember anyone I know owning one! Even though I couldnt use the tractor I wanted; it was a very good baler in all condtions.

Dang good baler! I upgraded to a 570 4 years ago, and the 315 sat in the shed for the 4 years. Neighbor broke his JD, and was caught with a slug of hay down! The 315 came out of the shed and proceeded to process 1,200 bales without a hitch!
