Chosing Finish Mower Deck-Land Pride vs Kodiak vs ????

Hi,

We have an old King Kutter finish mower deck which is about shot. It is also probably not a good fit for our property as we have a few stumps and rocks around but we do need a nice finish to the grass. We do have a bush hog for the really bad areas but I would like a recommendation for a good, relatively heavy duty finish mower.

I have been told that Land Pride is one of the best to buy. For the size we can use (5 footer) the cost is a little less then $2K. The dealer that gave me that quote also suggested a Kodiak finish mower that would be about $500 less then the Land Pride.

We don't have a lot of free capital so the Kodiak price looks good but we also don't have a lot of manpower to continually work on mower decks if they break. The King Kutter has been in that category of continual work. ie more then routine greasing and sharpening of blades.

We do want rear discharge and hard rubber tires. Our King Kutter has neither.

Is there another brand that would be a better choice for us?

We will be using a 8N to mow with. We have about 4 acres of grass that is mowed weekly.

Thanks for any input!

I would go with the Land Pride mower. I assume that you want a 3 point hitch model for the Ford tractor. Look at the factory welds and compare the thickness of the deck sheet metal. I bought a Land Pride 35-90 in 1992 to pull with a Farmall M and I have been extremely well pleased with it. Nothing but routine maintenance and one belt. It won't come with hard rubber I don't think. If you buy one take the tires off and clean the goop out and go with inner tubes. Ellis

There are no Land Prides in town to look at but I did go look at the Kodiak. I think it would be ok but it has chains on the back that the Land Pride doesn't. I also haven't found any manuals or instructions on the Kodiak. The Land Prides are on line and very helpful. They both have the same 3/16" steel deck. John Deere has a finish mower with 1/4" deck but it is close to $2.5K to buy. Both the Land Pride and Kodiak have solid wheels and are not inflatable. We have had multiple flats on our old King Kutter.

Thanks for your input.

Just bought a Land Pride FDR1672(16 series, 6ft) earlier this
spring. Have it mounted on a CA Allis. Mower is perfect for
26hp. Does an incredible job of cutting. Even in very tall
brome, two passes and there are very few clippings left.
Doesn't plug in wet grass either. Very, very good mower!

I wouldn't buy a finish mower until you have looked at the Woods line up. They have several price point mowers, none of which are cheapened to the point of being junk. BTW, Rear chain shielding is a good thing.(you mentioned on the Kodiak)

With the 8N I was looking at the FDR 1660. We have a 60" mower now and the tractor seems to handle that well. Being from Kansas and the Land Pride being made here is also a plus! :)

In looking at the Woods and First Choice the dealer options are best for Land Pride with 4 or 5 dealers and parts counters within 5 miles of where we are going to use it. The Woods closest dealer is 20 miles away and then 40 miles away and then 90 miles away. I didn't see any First Choice locally.

Guess now I need to convince the people with the purse strings to cough up the extra $500. I looked at the Kodiak and it would do but the Land Pride gets rave reviews and I don't read much about the Kodiak brand.

Thanks for all of the help, it has been much appreciated.

Replaced the last king cutter with a First Choice. It is much better built compared to the King Cutter. Just been triping over it in the barn though since I brought a Kubota Commercial Diesel Mower. I know as soon as I sold it I would have a need for it. I used it for about six years mowing a 2 acre yard though, and just replaced the belt and blades. Its all I did to it other then keeping it well greased. I ran it on a 30 hp kubota. I liked it but the commercial mower is alot easier to mow around things and doesn't tieup a tractor.

Ok one last question. I had been planning to get a 60 inch mower deck. The local Ford dealer states that the biggest Land Pride we can get should be a 60 inch deck and not to go to the 72" deck. The local Woods dealer states that for our tractor (Ford 8N), that the Woods can go to 72" and not overload the tractor but that they agree that the Land Pride should stay at 60". Is that shine-ola? :?: Or can we really get to 72 inches with a Woods deck (PR-60W model).

Part of the confusion is how many HP the 8N has. It is a 1952 model side mount distributor. Online I see references for 23 hp, 25 hp and 27 hp. Woods folks say it is a 27 hp at the PTO. The Ford guy says 23 hp.

Anyone with real world experience with 60 vs 72 inch decks and my tractor :?:

Thanks!!!
