I'm rebuilding a John Deere 952 running gear and the rims are 4"x16". Tire charts tell me that the proper tire for these rims are 6.00x16 which I can only find new as implement tires - $100 or so each. This will be a parade wagon when completed and loads will not exceed 2 tons. As I will need a matched set of 4 tires, can I use less expensive used tires such as 205x60x16 even though they are recommended for rims wider than 4"?

try this link to find a close size in modern tire sizing.

205=8.1 inches wide

like another poster mentioned, a used car mini spare is about the right size.
155/90/16=27-6.1-16

Our 1943 vintage JD Wagon also has the 4x16 wheels and originally called for 6.00x16. They handled large loads of loose hay (8'x16' body with front and rear racks, loaded 8-9' high with a hayloader)OK. As the tire width increased, we were forced to go with wider tires and often used 7:00 or 7:50x16. Now I have resorted to the radial LT tires, which are better with the heavier baled hay loades. Only problem I have had is with turning clearance. When you cut sharp with a wider tire it rubs on the body stringer. I get used matched sets from a local tire shop at no charge.

I had posted a similar question recently on the Tractor Talk forum. LT215/85/R16 tires were recommended as a size that could work.

I've got an old running gear with oddball 16-in rims that currently have 700x16 tires, and was asking about newer replacement tires.

We run car tires on all of our hay wagons, and we'd probably run even bigger based on whats available to us. Maybe a 7.00 or 7.50x16, or the equivilent would be about a 235 75 R16.

If you can get some light truck tires, you'll be set.

Look at 155/90X16 spare tire as used by several mfg. Chrysler, Honda, Saturn, and maybe Hyundai.

I found some 600-16's on the net. I got 2 of one brand and 2 of another, put one brand on one side and one on the other and you would have to look close to tell the difference. I didn't want to wait for the others to be back ordered. They were 50 miles away and I drove down and got them. They were about half of what others were asking. Mine went on an Oliver 391 with a flair box for show only. Watch the net an maybe they will get some more on there. TC

Personally I would go with the 600 x 16. 5:50 x 16 will also work. I put new 5:50 x 16 multi rib implement tires on the front of my I-4 a couple of years ago and they were a lot less than $100 each.A good local tire dealer should be able to find you some for a resonable price.

Pssst - tire prices have _really_ shot up the past 2 years after the govt played import games with China..... Check now & you'd be surprised....

If you keep your towing to 30 mph or so and I'd assume loaded you would be going much slower, the used tires will last for years & years. Might want to put tubes in them, never had much luck combining old implement rims with used car/truck tires and expect them to hold.
