3PT Barrel Sprayer

After the adventures I've been having with my Bean spray rig I am really thinking about making my own sprayer from the remnants of a barrel sprayer on our ranch. I have the PTO mounted pump so that's a plus. However, can anyone give me a very rough estimate as to how much and what else I would need to go this route?

Did you have a Ford or a Ferguson in the early 50's? That sprayer was built and sold for them, I am not sure of the maker. Easy to figure a design, hardest part will be able to get an agitation system in there as they did not have one and the new sprays need it. It was set so when spraying only the pump excess went back in the tank and was just dumped out of a 5/8" hose. Suction hose would be 3/4". Orignal pump would have been a gear pump with a 1 1/8" PTO connection. Booms would have been a wet boom with a 1/2" aluminm pipe. You should go with a hose boom. Do you have any of the boom? Orignal type and size tips no longer avaible for years. need to go with the new style. Pump should have garden hose thread fittings. Try the pump and see if it will pump water and see if the valve is free to move to all positions and let us know. Do you want a boom and what size do you want? I have a boom that would fit that sprayer. Post a close up picture of both front and back of the valve and of the pump then we can pretty much tell you what you would need. And auto heater hose is all you need for the pump hoses. No need for high priced sprayer hose. That is what the Deere parts man told me to use when I was trying to set up a sprayer.

Interesting, very interesting Leroy. We do have an Ford 861 Powermaster that I use quite a bit. My Grandfather bought the tractor fairly new and it came with many implements. I have the PTO connection but no booms. I'll post more pics during the week so you can check it out.

Your 3 PT sprayer is just like mine. We replaced the metal tank several years ago with a (plastic) 55 gal drum. Tee'd a 1/4" agitator line off the pressure side from the pump. Original booms still work good. Apply generous amounts of lubricant to your valves before you work them, Good luck. David/

Here are some more pics Leroy.

You have a newer valve of the curant style and also the pump is a newer roller type. Internal repaires are avaible for both. A new valve is in the hundred dollar range. The pump feeds the valve from the back if I remember correctly (sold my sprayers a few years back, were going to be converted to run the sprayer pumps with a 5 horse Honda gas engine and be pulled by horses, also sold the person that bought mine several other sprayers that I found) And you can see where the pressure relief valve is and that will probably need replacing (get one and guage with max setting or reading of 60 lbs., higher than that the pump cannot handle. They will want to sell you a higher pressure guage but on a 200# guage you can't read close enough to get the lower pressure settings in the 30# range you need, a water pump guage from the big box store is all you need. The pressure relief line comes off the relief valve and dumps back in tank. The outlet on oposide side of valve would be the agitator line and should be connected to an adigator at the bottom of the tank. each of the outlets on the back of the valve is for a section of boom on a 3 boom unit and that valve will control any combinations you want. Some of those outlets in the valve body will be 1/2" and others 3/4" pipe thread and use a pipe thread to garden hose thread adapter from your hardware or big box store along with the replacement garden hose ends, all female thread. Put a hose thread disconect at every place on pump, valve and lines. Easier to clean, and winterize. That was all standard untill the bigger sprayers and the Deere dealer parts man when I went to set up the premerge sprayer on my planter and went to get the parts they told me they do not carry the parts as they were to high priced from Deere and just go buy the garden hose fittings and auto heater hose and for rights you need 1/2", 5/8" & 3/4" and to feed the booms you need 3/8" line. Later I bough food grade plastic lines from U. S. Plastics in Lima, Ohio. They will ship all over. The regular plastic sprayer hose too still and all the time breaking. The valve is marked as to what line goes where. Also have a filter screen between the tank and pump and if you could find a tank you could hook up the line from tank to pump that would be a lot better than trying to draw the spray out the top bung hole of the drum as set up for now.

Man you obviously know your spray rigs Leroy!!! That's a lot of solid info you just gave me. I'll be working on this very soon.

Where did you purchase an equivalent plastic 55 gallon drum? I've looked around but can't seem to find a place that has drum types.
