Flail mowers??

Any experience with them? Getting ready to buy one and need to decide between Y blades and the hammer blades.
Purpose will be to go over the pastures after the horses finish to smooth out the mole hills, spread manure and take out minimal brush (volunteer fruit trees, briars, and some big weeds) nothing more than 1/2" . Is one type better suited than the other for certain jobs or is it just one lasts longer than the other?

Thanks,

Dave

i'd go with the hammers because of the dirt and brush...the grass Y blades mite work but they'll wear out faster in sand and prob break if you hit too big a piece of brush or rock.

man is right about y-blades, work good on grass... a bigger issue might be what hp required for the flail and how much hp do you have? underpowered flail won't work and will beat the tractor up! read up on the brand you want and make an informed decision for your money, some of us don't!

They work well in grass but my luck with them in weeds is they strip off the leaves and leave the stalk. Hammer knives are the best.
Just my 2 cents.

Ive had a Mathews for years. If you go slow enough they will make your pasture look like a golf course. I do not have the y knives on mine, just a set of flat paddles. Every 3rd or fourth year I take the front off mine and touch up the cutting paddles with a 4 inch grinder.

Comparing a Bush Hog to a Flail, the Flail will require more HP, but a flail usually does not require you to over-lap your passes to clean up the wheel mark missed by the Bush Hog..
I like the off-set type..I can get closer to fences, etc with the right side..

For smoothing a pasture, a flail won't do much..a drag and cultipacker or roller would do better..
Ron..
