The owners manual for the planter, and the back of the seed corn bag would give you the correct plate size for the intended plant population.

The number of cells in the plate would correspond to the charts and the setting for the transmission.

I kinda forget as well, but bottom line is, find some hard ground. set the planter shallow. Put the plates in, the seed, and drop it down. Drive a few hundred feet. Measure off the appropriate row lenght for the spacing, and count the number of seeds laying on the ground that represents 1/1000 of an acre.

For 38" rows, I think it is 13.8' if memory serves me this evening. 138 feet for 1/100 of an acre

Yes you are right. I remember my dad "calibrating" the planter in the hard dirt going "down the lane" to the field and we would count...I had forgotten about doing that until you mentioned....Thx

694, 695& 697 were all 16 cell plates for flat seeds and we used all 3 along with plastic plates, looking back we should have had 24 cell as we increased the population, pretty sure the 290 only came out with 16 cell but 24 cell will fit

I think you are correct. I asked a neighbor farmer and he mentioned the 16 and 24 and also the plated for "flats" and "rounds". I wonder what the 694, etc. numbers actually represented?

Thanks for reply, it is good to share common interests....

Go to JD parts.com ; Do catalog no. search; for # 268; seed plates; Tons of useful info. on every JD seed plate; lot's of planting seed populations; & general info...

the numbers were the plate # cast into it, nothing more, most farmers preferred flats as we did, not sure why, could ask Dad when he gets home from Vac., I started farming with a 494A.

The plates with 3 numbers were 16 cell, the ones with 4 numbers were 24 cell.later plastic ones came out with a letter then a small number.
