What model -- IH sickle mower

Can you guys tell me the model of this mower? I think the belt guard is missing, and maybe that's where the model number should be.

Looks to be a 100. Check the wobble box for a decal or remnants there of. Should be facing out by your ladder. Is the cover off on the box or is it a shadow? Oily maybe? If it's a 100, the only belt guard is the thin one that is above the top of the belt on the drive pulley.

No prob! Those 100's are good machines. I have a 120, myself. It bolts to the drawbar & has a caster wheel. If you don't have one already, I do recommend getting a manual. They do have reprints, here on the site, for the 100 Balanced Head mower. I don't know if they have the service manual for the balanced head, itself. Your local CaseIH dealer should be able to obtain, for you, a new crisp copy. I own a copy & am qite happy with it. Fortunately/unfortunately I haven't had to use it, yet.

I bring the service manual up because of the oil on the cover of your machine. There may be a bad seal in the wobble box throwing grease around. I have also seen a few of those boxes that were filled with JD corn picker grease. I believe it was an inexpensive & quick fix for the owner that was performed when the bearing seals failed. The little silver buton, that covers the hole used to grease the bearing cross inside, was removed & replaced with a rubber bung or threaded pipe plug. The grease warmed up & leaked past the casting. It may just be a loose cover with a lot of grease built up on the back. A closer inspection & checking for excess play in the box should tell you what's going on. I take the belt off before I turn the pulley on the box. I noted the cutter bar is rusty. That should hold the knife steady while you check for play. The pulley shouldn't move more than a half-inch from side to side. I'd have to dig out the manuals to give more detailed info about it. I'm a bit pooped tonight, but I can try to fill you in a bit more tomorrow evening if you'd like.
