Cockshutt 311 Side Delivery Rake - Chain Tightener Spring

I have a Cockshutt 311 Side Delivery Hay Rake.

The part I'm researching is R-5107 which is the "SPRING - Chain Tightener Arm".

On this particular hay rake, it's a chain drive which requires a chain tighenter which is just a metal arm with a block of wood attached at the end. The block of wood actually rubs against the chain, and the SPRING keeps the block of wood push against the chain.

I'm looking for the SPRING or at least what the RIGHT SIZE and TYPE of spring I need. Again, the part number for the Owners Manual is R-5107.

I have 311 and it's just a regular type spring.I think a tarp strap would work I'll let you know how long it is and diameter tomorrow as it's not at home know.

rained here today can't go get my semi or look at the rake, have to wait for it to dry.Road here is clay no gravel so I willget you a pic and measurements yet.

Thank you so much! Will you do another favor for me please. I've got replacement teeth for all 90 holes, but I'm curious if your rake used washers to attach the teeth. Specifically the ones I took off to do the restore all had these 1 1/4 inch flat washers on nut side of each bolt. I want to simply use a lock-washer, but maybe there was a reason they used that large flat washer. Maybe vibration or something. DOES your rake use a lock-washer or the large flat washer on the nut side of the bolt?

You're awesome, thank you.

here is a pic of the spring It is 1"x5 1/2" mine has had a idler put in instead of the wood block.I don't know if this would change the spring or not but I doubt it.I'll check the washer next time I go to the feild.

What a fantastic picture! You are the BEST! :D Only go out again if its on your way to something though. Thank YOU so much!

Thanks to you I found the spring, but more importantly, when I saw your solution to the chain tensioner I knew it was the way to go. I kept the WOOD BLOCK, but the idler pulley works slick. Thought your might enjoy the pictures. There's a few touch ups to do, and I'm still curious if yours used the big washers on the teeth, but I'm pretty happy with the results. Thank YOU again for your help. Couldn't have finished without your help.

Very nice work on your rake restoration and thanks for sharing the pics. Lots of work goes into restoring a rake - especially to the detailed level that you are going. I have refurbished 2 JD 594 rakes for my hobby use on a few acres of hay. Will your rake be used to rake hay or will it be a show piece only?

I used the hay rake twenty minutes after the pictures were taken... Like I told my Mom (who helped me - she's 87 years old), that's the last time we'll see it that nice. :) Thanks again for all your help.

nice pic good job re doing it.My question would be why is it that color and why the MM decal instead of COCKSHUTT.I will let you know about the washer yet.

Minneapolis Moline painted IMPLEMENTS this color red. Cockshutt is red too (same as FARMALL red, or very close). The only difference is Minneapolis Moline's had the Prairie Gold #2 wheel rims, and Cockshutt would have had the Cockshutt YELLOW (but it looks like IVORY white).

I really could have gone either way; I like them both, but where I have a Minneapolis Moline R tractor, I thought it would look better.

I actually spoke to a guy who use to work for MM when they were all merging together into the WHITE tractor company; OLIVER's, COCKSHUTT, and Minneapolis Moline. He said that whatever paint they had going that day is what they painted them. Same implement, just different paint. I'm not sure about that, but that's what he said.

Thanks again for ALL your help. Made a HUGE difference.

there is a big washer on the back side .pics on page 2 if you haven't seen them

Really... I don't understand the picture on page 2 part of your message, but I'd love to see a picture if you have one. I had all the washers, but it just didn't make sense of why to use a big washer like that. I used lock washers, but maybe there's a reason. Hmmm?

The picture is in topic "don't know" on page 2 of "Implement Alley"

The pictures on page 2 are of the hay rake I just restored. I was hoping for a picture from user "camju" who supplied me with picture of the chain tensioner and saved the day. I was hoping he took a picture of the large flat washers on his hay rake. :)

Go to page 2 and look for the topic titled DON"T KNOW that's where camju's picture is! I repeat the topic heading on the left is [b:9aa4bb366a][i:9aa4bb366a][u:9aa4bb366a]DON'T KNOW[/u:9aa4bb366a][/i:9aa4bb366a][/b:9aa4bb366a]

Edit: If you still can't find the picture, heres what it shows! A flat washer that looks like a heavy duty fender washer, then a lock wasser, then the nut.

The picture is on page 2 of this form.Iam on dial up and didn't find what page this was on so I posted a new topic. It takes me 10 min. at least to post apic and I didn't want to do it twice.I hope you can find it if not email me and I can send you the pic in a min or 2.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL YOUR HELP ON THIS PROJECT. Looks like I have 90 nuts to take off, and 90 nuts and washers to put on. I wish I knew why they used the large washer. Mine had them on originally and I thought it was just something the prior owner did so I left them off. Yours probably confirms mine was the original set up too; with the large washers.

Hmmm... Why the large washers? What purpose I wonder... Thank YOU again for all your help and the PICTURES were absolutely GREAT!

I am restoring the very same model or rake, this has been a help to no ends for me.

I was wondering if your rake has some mounts on the hitch that look like Hydraulic mountings. I'm totally confused on what they are. I will try to take some pictures and post if I can.

Thanks for your help in advance.
