D17 and round baler

What would be a good round baler match for a D17. Kids are graduating and putting up squares by myself is not what i want to do. Looking for a good match for the D17 and needed a good place to start........Thank you

Well first off you need to update the hyds on it if it only has one hook up.
That said I know a guy who bales big rounds with a D-17 and he pulls an old NH850 chain baler behind it and has for a decade or more. To top that he is/was an Allis dealer in Eldon MO and last time I talked to him he was still baling with that same D-17 and the same 850 chain baler so if in good shape a D-17 should in theory handle just about any of them because the chain balers take more HP then the blet ones do

Thank you. I do have the hydrolics updated with an aux pump on the front that runs the loader and the aux hydro when I need them.......I was looking at a vermeer 403 baler but might go a tad bigger if the old girl will handle it..........

We used to run a 5600 Heston with our 170 gas, just an updated version of your D-17. I now use a Vermeer 505 Super I, and either a 686 or an 886 I.H. for power. I have used my 830 Case in a pinch, but it was about all it could handle. I know my 170 would not run that Vermeer I have now.

Big thing is look at what HP the baler needs then go from there. As per the manual for my NH850 it takes 55HP to run it and the early D-17 was not that HP but close at 52HP as per the neb. tests. So if you find a baler that needs 55HP or less to run your D-17 should handle it ok unless the old girl is wore out that is

she is worn out but has a strong tranny and rear end........really thinking about giving her an overhaul this winter.......could sink that much money into another tractor and then still do repairs to boot so i figure dump into what I have and then I know i have a good tractor......then go looking for a nice round baler

I have a d17 that I pull a round baler with and it work fine. I use a vermeer 605c. It is an older baler but you can find them cheap and they are easy to work on. I added dual two way hydraulics to the tractor so I could use hydraulic tie on the baler. Not all of the balers have hydraulic tie.

Find one of them 4X4 balers and pull it. A good number of the smaller 4X4 etc do not need the HP that the bigger ones need. As I said a D-17 in good shape will handle a NH850 and that is a 6X6 bale and can be very heavy.. But then I do know and I also know D-17s since I have one hooked up to a NH271 square baler right now

I use a D17 serries 4 on my 851 New Holland. It handles it just fine. The baler is set to make the largest possiable bale, around 1200 lbs.

(quoted from post at 13:55:25 07/28/10) NH850 and that is a 6X6 bale and can be very heavy.

I was unaware NH built a baler that made 6X6 bales.

I thought Vermeer was the only one that had built a 6 ft wide size rd baler.
