Deere 328 baler?

Well, I had made my mind up just to keep the old 273 and try to plug along with it this year, even with the amount of hay I am planning on shoving thru it. But I came across an early model JD 328. Looks a little rough in places, the guy told me he had never baled with it, but as of a couple of years ago(previous owner passed away, baler set last year), he knew it was baling. He says its got some rust in the bale chamber(see pic). If this thing is baling right, hows the capacity compared to a 273? Any weak points to look for on it? It's missing the bale chute, kinda rusty, and I don't know a thing about a Deere baler. Price is $1500 cash...makes me wonder how bad the rust in the chamber really is. Oh, at this price, I'd be keeping my 273. Here's a few pics...any input? He says we can run some hay thru itto see what it does, if I bring the hay, which I can do.

Hmm. Might have to do some work on the chamber. That's just metal work tho...
I'd be more interested in plunger bearings, knife and feeder mechanism. Also look the knotters over for slop/wear.
I don't know the failings of those balers but it doesn't look too bad for the money if your baler market is as expensive as you say.
Lack of bale shute is probably because they were hauling a basket or accumulator... At least this one has the equivelant of the SuperSweep pickup.

The owner says he's ran it and it sounded find. I think I'm gonna go look at it tomorrow. This guy has a bunch of equipment for sale...cheap. I think somebody is just in a bad way of it. I went to look at the 311...one side was not tying and I couldn't tell why. It was missing lots of pickup teeth, and I think it had been sprayed down with diesel or something to make it look a little better...all the sheet metal was real slick(even the rsuty spots), though I couldn't smell anything. Baler was far less than average, and I couldn't get him to budge more than $2800. Dealer had a real bad attitude. I shouldn't have wasted my time. At this point, the only other thing I'm even considering is a mid 90's 570, delivered, garunteed to work, for $8500, but thats a little more than I was looking to spend. It's not a bad looking baler though, and the dealer was more than willing to stand behind it.

With what 328s bring around here, I'd buy it, weld some new steel into the bale case or put bale skis in, do a little tinkering here and there and eventually paint and decal it. Too bad you're so far away, I have a wagon chute for it, but it looks like the wagon hitch has been shortened . . . probably did have a bale basket behind it.
