Hey guys

I dropped some stuff off at an upcoming auction site today & there's an old round baler there (iirc only one company made them; AC maybe?). Didn't pay a lot of attention to it; looked to have been sitting a long time but pretty well complete. Got to thinking on the way home that this auction is so unpredictable it may go dirt cheap (or maybe sky high) so is there any "collector demand" for these? I might gamble on making a few bux on it but need to have a "general idea" of what to look for, what it might bring in working condition, etc. It's rusty looking but I can check it out closer just before the auction (about 200 miles from here so not until just before the sale). Any tips, insight, etc. appreciated!

Lew

Hey guys

Update; the baler sold; it started at 100 & brought 325 (I think; maybe 375?) anyway WAY more than I was willing to spend. Got some other really good deals at the sale though.

Some place back in my old mind I seem to remember the idea for the Allis Round Baler was made by Vemeer. This would have been in the 49-50"s.

Baled all of dads hay with one when in highschool. Bought one when got my own place. They are just about problem free when used behind a swather. Loaned it to a neighbor 25 years ago. Told him I would come and get it if I needed it. I guess he still has it.

Grew up with the AC roto-balers. It"s a love hate relationship. As a kid hated it. Now I"m over 40 and think its a very interesting piece of machinery (first of its kind ?)We have one that has the original paint, decals , runs good and looks very good always stored in the shed .It"s not used on the farm any more. I take it to the antique power show near us. It does get peoples curiosity especially when I start it up .

The later models (white top) are the more valuable animal. You can get belts from Hammond Equipment. Check the gear racks for cracks/welds, these are the curved racks on either side of the bottom of the baler. The trick to baling right is to rake 2 windrows together, till they merge, not lay on top of each other. That and the drier the better, baler just bales better after 6 in the evening. Beers, I mean.

I just bought one last week for $200, similar to what you describe. Belt condition is important- replacements run over $400 for all. Dad"s baler worked fine for the 17 years he had it- only repaired one small part twice. Making the proper windrow is key to getting good bales.

Thanks Chevy; I plan to look it over pretty close saturday morning. I'll probably "talk myself out of it" by then.

If it is indeed an AC roto-baler then the value really depends. I paid 50 bucks for mine and it needs 2 new belts and is ready to run. I've seen other people pay to have them taken away, and then theres folks who pay good money for one ($200-300). Add to the fact its 200 miles away and the thing is 9 foot wide and offset to one side, would make it tough to get it home.

Thanks guys; guess I wasn't real clear on it; I'd have NO desire to try using it; just wondered if it has any demand by collectors (would only plan to see if I could get it going so I could advertise it as "working." If it went for 25 I'll probably buy it "just because it's something no one else around here has." IOW yard art. :)

TX Jim give me a shout direct (lew at lewslittlefarm dot com) if you get a chance.

Handled thousand's of the little bales in my younger years. Dad was a firm believer in the small rounds. There was a guy that custom baled, and was really busy all summer. Back then a lot of hay was fed in mangers in barns and there was a lot less wastage with the round bales versus the squares. A lot of people said there were hard to handle, but like everything, you learned how and was just as easy as squares I thought. I later had a baler and they were fun to operate. Their value today, not a whole lot unless they are in above average condition.

To add to what Old stated I can't imagine how tiring it would be have to stop/start every time a bale is formed. Plus think how time consuming ir would be, just stopping on a larger rd baler cuts down on productivity enough.

Sounds like an old Allis Roto baler and it was the one baler I owned for one summer and sold it as fast as I could and never looked back. I learned to hate that machine that summer and I said I would never own one again and have pasted up more then one that sold for $25 or less. You had to rake the hay just right to make a good bale and if you didn't you ended up with ice-cream cone bales and messed up or broken belt etc etc
