Thought I'd share a few pics of my grandfathers plow that I plan to restore someday soon to use with his H that I restored over the past few years.

Can anyone give me any info on what bottoms are on the plow?

Does anyone know if spoked wheels with rims are correct and is the rim on the trail wheel correct? They almost look like they could be cutoffs but I'm not sure.

Seth Boyer said: (quoted from post at 03:34:55 04/21/10) Both moldboards as far as I can tell are in great shape. I was going through the barn last summer and ran across a new pair of shares.

I'm not familiar with the correct terms for the parts of the plow but the shares and the point are all one piece. Is that common?

What's the term used for these bottoms?

You've got blacksmith shares that are one piece with the gunnel (landside) welded on also. They can be heated up and sharpened. I've answered your other questions on the redpower board.

The front wheels are definately "cut-downs". My little genius is the same way. Factory rubber tired wheels would not have spokes. Your rear wheel is correct for a later plow that came on rubber, but I think that tire is beyond help, and the rim is rusted through also. The rear wheel CAN be fixed with enough patience, but might be better to find a decent used wheel, or an original all steel rear wheel. The moldboards appear to be original, or at least original type, and look to be in very useable condition.

I doubt that the front wheels on that plow are modified--the way the spokes are fastened to the hub and to the wheel itself. That could be a FUN restoration because the plow looks like it's in excellent shape. Taken all apart, sand-blasted, and painted, with new tires all around would make this thing a jewel!! But do like someone suggested---run the plow an hour or two in dry soil, or slightly sandy,to shine up the moldboards. Don't sandblast them.

The rear wheel was built that way, and that tire looks pretty good so maybe it just needs a new tube.

If the front moldboard is as good as the rear one looks, then you might have a pretty good plow.

The spoked big wheels might have been altered to use with tires, but what the heck...see if you can find a couple tires to fit those rims.

Then give every zerk you can find a good shot of grease, take apart and regrease the trip mechanism, hook up the plow to your H with a "twisted clevis", drop it into some sandy ground (NOT rocky!) and start plowing. After several hours there is a chance those moldboards will begin to shine once again.

Don't ever let anyone take that neat plow to the scrap yard.

Hi Seith: Great that your restoring your Grandfathers Farmall H and IHC plow. Question: Are you asking what did the IHC Factory build and sell or are you wanting to restore what your Grandfather had and used? I have 2 IH 2x14 plows but the one had several things changed... the entire moldboards are from another company. Lots of things got "fixed" back in the 1930's great Depression and into 1940's WW-2 restriction on parts with what ever parts one could find starting with "free" parts being first choice. I'd suggest you go for just what you think he had and used... which most likely is what you see in the picture. Good luck and post pictures when finished... ag
