I'm looking at buying a used Hesston 740 round baler and was wondering if anyone could help me out with a few questions.

1) What are the 740's good and bad points? Is it a decent machine? What's a fair price on the east coast for one in very good condition?

2) Right now I'm rolling with a New Holland 848 twine wrap with Bale Command but need to find a replacement for this coming hay season. Is the Hesston as good as the New Holland? Will the Hesston do similar throughput as the New Holland?

3) The Hesston's hitch looks like a pintle (doughnut), I'm currently setup to run it on a flat one-piece drawbar (off a JD 4020) and tow it home with a regular flat receiver hitch - will this work? What is the proper tractor drawbar for this setup? Is the correct drawbar/receiver hitch setup available for the 4020/pickup truck?

Thanks for your help.

I have a 740 bought new about 15 years ago, came with a bolt for hitch pin. Bolt down thru hitch, castle nut on tight and cotter pin for safety. I tried a new baler with electric tie but bought one with hydraulic tir arm. the electric arm went to fast and had to go back and forth across bale to many times to do a good job. Just like any round baler with belts-make sure and feed hay evenly-a lopsided bale will throw belts off and rip out splicers. I am very satisfied with this baler thats why I still have it, beets the NH I had before. Makes a very nice tight bale in decent hay, I do about 2500 to 3000 bales per year, hay and straw. 4X4 bales are easier for my wife to roll around (LOL)

i run a Hesston 560 and I love it. As far as the hitch question. They are setup diffent from others. you cant just set it down on the draw bar and put a pin in it like most. You have to bolt a category 2 pin on the drawbar and the baler will set down on the pin and then you just put a clip pin thru the top of the category 2 pin. Hope that makes since
