Moco or haybine? JD 485 or NH 1469?

Been keeping an eye out for a moco or haybine in order to step up from the sickle mower. I cut and bale about 25 acres 2 or 3 times a year.

I've run across a decent looking JD 485 PTO moco at what seems like a fair price. Needs a tire and some TLC but is basically ready to work. Are these any count or did they have known problems? Are there any issues with the steel crimpers that it has? The fields I'm cutting are clean and flat.

The other option is a NH 1469 self-propelled (I've always heard the term haybine). The business end looks to be in good shape but it need a new engine. I've just taken a brief look and haven't looked close at the wobble box and underneath. Did this model have any particular problems? I'm not worried about re-powering it, just more concerned where the weak parts are in the powertrain and steering.

I'll take a JD sq baler over a NH baler any day. Some NH's I've been around couldn't make a square bale of which 2 models were a 275 & 570 . Also the feeder mechanism on some NH tended to get mangled. Plus IMHO later models after the JD 24/224 series balers are easier to time if needed than a NH because of only 2 drive chains on a JD.

But for a hay cutter for me it's NH or Vermeer

Thanks for all the advice! I'll start looking into a way to transport the NH or keep looking for something closer.

msb,

I remember selling/delivering those mo-co's that were JD first 2 attempts to build a mo-co. I remember walking around field looking for parts that fell off them. I think the 1207/1209's & 1217/1219's were the best mo-co's JD built but I'd buy a NH haybind.

Look closely at the wobble boxes. I usually greased mine every 4-6 hours and they last forever. Check the final drives as I have heard they can be a weak point.

I own a JD 480, which is very similar to the 485, just a little older. The 480 was Deere's first haybine. It doesn't have a very good reputation, but it worked pretty well for me. My only real problem with it was that the pivot for the rolls was rusty, and there were no zerks for it (a design flaw), so I couldn't get the rolls close enough together for a good crimping action. It threw the hay out the back in kind of a tedding action, so it was still better than a sickle mower. I also had a cast iron coupler in the drive shaft break when a plug stopped the reel (I was still learning that you only run it in first gear). I was able to replace it with a Deere retrofitted shear-bolt assembly, which was an improvement. I usually pulled it behind a WD, it was never much of a load. Later I bought a Gehl 2160 for cheap, so the 480's my backup now.
