ASAE vs. "normal" hydraulic cylinder

In shopping for a hydraulic cylinder for my plow, I've discovered that many places handle two different 3-1/2"x8" cylinders.

One is designated an ASAE cylinder, and the closed dimension is approximately 2" longer than a "normal" cylinder. I would imagine the extended length is also about 2" longer.

The ASAE cylinder is always a few dollars cheaper than the same size and brand normal cylinder.

How would I know when I needed one type or the other?

I think an ASAE standard 31/2" X 8" cylinder is 20 1/2" in and 28 1/2" extended, center to center of the 1" pins on each end.

You look at what you actually need and buy that. There are many different lengths of stroke. Check both the extended and closed length.
