hydraulic cylinder help.......

We bought a 5 inch cylinder with about a 36 inch throw to make a wood splitter with but we are having trouble with a third circuit. The cylinder is from a truck mounted crane and has a safety circuit on it. Any ideas on working around this or how it should be plumbed to work. It has the standard pressure and return sides then a third port with a very small line that to my understanding must have pressure on it for it to work. We tried on a tractor and it would barely move. Any ideas on how this should be done to make work correctly?

I don't know if this will help, but - the safety valve on most crans is just a check valve. With no pressure the cylinder will not move.

I would guess that the small line would be a pilot line to a pilot operated check valve. Could also be a pilot line to a counterbalance valve. Dose it look like it has some sort of adjustment on it? Pictures might help. The drawing shows how you might be able to hook it up.

Yes it has a pilot line it was on a truck mounted crane. However, the adjustment screw is two stepped with o-rings and when it is all the way open there is maybe 5 holes around where oil can go through and they are maybe 1/8 holes (could be less holes). It just looks like a bottle neck. Should the pilot be plumbed on the retract side? I think he had it on the pressure side the first time he tried it. He wants to cut the bottom part of the valve off and put it back in.

There ya go! Didn't think of that the first time I read this thread, but yea - a pilot valve. If a line bursts, it won't retract with that valve.

He could likely throw all that out of his setup, get rid of the pilot valve entirely.

How much flow does the pump on the tractor have? That cylinder holds a little over 3 gallon of oil!.I would say the third line is a return from a simple releif if it is a safety circuit. How about more details? Also remember it takes 1 horse power to pump 1 gallon of oil at 1500 PSI. How large is the pump you are using in GPM? What is the relief valve setting on your control valve? Do you know what kind of truck crane this cylinder came off of? Where is the third circuit/ The cylinder is one circuit/ How about more details/ I will try to send you an e-mail as well. J.

We tried it on a 4020 diesel tractor (90+hp). I can't recall what they pump a minute in oil but it has a jd158 loader on it and it works it fine. You are correct it that the cylinder would be one circuit I was wondering if the relief valve had to be on its own circuit but it appears from diagram posted earlier it needs to be plumbed on the return. The reflief valve looks like a constriction to me not much oil can go through it all the way open. Tractor scv's should be set at 2100 or more. We have not tried plumbing relief side into return yet. I will post back with more details after we have tried that. Thanks for your help.
