Hello all. We are looking at an IH 400 corn planter it seems to be in decent shape, it has been sitting for a while and needs some work, I know nothing about corn planters, Is this a good one? Is $2000 too much? Does it plant fairly eavenly? Does the blower thing work OK? We only have about 25 acres to do. It seems parts are still available. Your input would be appreciated. Thanks.

We had an earlier 6 row air planter. It worked REALLY good til someone decided that we were only planting the same amount in a day as we were with the 7000 deere 4 row, and sped it up. It was too light to run fast. Went back to a 7200 deere 6 row. It was a good planter otherwise.

The people who bought our place brag up their CIH planter, but you look at what they plant versus everyone else, and you laugh at them. In 3 years here they have yet to plant for two years for anyone that I know of. But they run too fast and don't have it tuned properly. The Deere/Kinze set-up is a little more forgiving.

Bought mine about 6 years ago. Paid $125. Nice 6 row 30. Dry fert, Insect. boxes. Runners instead of disks. You can get them to plant acurate if you drive slow. REAL SLOW.

Its a $200 planter most places. You want a runner opener planter as the disc opener ones are very uneven on the depth that they plant at. I had good luck with a 400 but that was years ago.

Two thousand is way over the top for a model 400. I don't understand how others had so many problems getting them to plant reasonably well, but for that money I would be looking at the newer model 800 or possibly a 900. I sold a six row 400 that didn't need any repairs which also had depth control gage wheels, fertilizer, and no-till bar/coulters, for $650. A 540 rpm pump is expensive. A 1000 rpm pump is a lot cheaper.

6rn seed spacing would be ok but depth control is the bigger problem, I plant a few beans with an 8-20 I made out of a 400 6rn years ago that I bought for $25.00, plants exactly how much I want but the emergence is slow and uneven. 400's are not without problems, drum drive bevel gears and seed hopper sealing can give problems, an 800IH is much better with a much better row unit and 8rows can be bought in the $800 to $1500 range, I personally prefer a jd or kinze but they are more $$'s

Bought one used many years ago. We knew the maintenance issues that went with it and still parked it after a couple of years. Went out and got our 7000 John Deere 6 row we have today. Traded the 400 in and got a chisel plow. Somebody wanted one real bad (why?) and the dealer gave us a good allowance on it.

A 400 should go for scrap iron price, no matter where it's located.Jim

I paid $200 for a 6 row narrow about 15 years ago. After using it several years pulled with my MF-135 (that almost was master of the planter) I switched to a JD7000. I can't quite classify the 400 as a planter. Seed counter yes, seed burrier, yes, but planter no, because it tends to alternate clumps and gaps in the row making many seed ineffective. And with seed costing upwards of $200 a sack, those irregular seed placements aren't profitable.

I suspect, but haven't checked, that the seed tubes need to be replaced because their insides are roughened by the sharp points of seed corn which makes the seed placement more irregular.

They can be a pain to keep up the air pressure, between slipping belts, or slow PTO, and seed tank air leaks, mostly at the seam.

I found that the seed pipes and the air pressure equalizing pipe between the drum and the tank must be swabbed out daily because insects love to build nests and cocoons in them. Those really block seed flow.

My 400s are better value as scrap metal than as planters. One is converted to a liquid 32% side dresser and I took some parts from the more complete one.

Another big problem is looseness in the chains and bearings and gears of the drum drive that let the drum step rather than turn smoothly. That may be fixable, I didn't try. I get a lot more corn grown with my JD7000 and the MF-135 is loafing pulling it (4 row narrow).

$2K is way over priced.

Gerald J.

'Here' the JD 7000 planters got real, real popular when IHC came out with the 400 air planter. Lot of Red farms with Red tractors & combines were pulling Green planters around for decades....

Took until Case came out with the 1200 model planter before I notice a lot of Green farms are now pulling Red planters around.

The 400 was ok, but I'd sure look for a JD 7000. 400 was pretty uneven planting, didn't do so well on hills either.

$2000 is about 10 times too high, heck I see 8 row 800 models sell for $600 around here - a 400 sells for just over scrap price. Someone is giving you a ride, unless there are a lot of extras with it even then 2 grand? No way for a 400.

It is pto drive, 6 row, Fertilizer boxes(1/2 full, UG) Small boxes on the back. Probbably pull it with a 3020 maybe 4020. I realize now $2000 seems like a lot but in Montana there are not many around.

I could get you 5 or 6 for that price.Heck maybe ten.

They are okay as far as spacing but not as good as others.

It depends on how many times that kernal bounces around in the tube as to how even they fall out the end.

I have used 400 air planters for many years. Bought my first one brand new in '76. $2000 is way too much. What are you looking at? 4, 6, or 8 row? PTO, or Hydraulic drive? Fertilizer attachment? Dry or liquid? Does it have all the seed drums you will need? What will you pull it with? Does your tractor have a "float" position on your hydraulic control lever?

I paid 185 for mine last year, good shape, planted good stand. Make sure you take care of all the air leaks and keep your pressure up to at least 11 lbs. I heard lots of negatives but mine sure worked good. 2 grand is way to much in my humble opinion.

I like how the 400will plant exactly to the seed count per acre ..Bought mine 25 yrs ago from a crazy JD dealer that knocked off $50 if I got it off his lot by noon that day $300.., it Is the only IHC product I have on the place! .., Been a very GOOD planter ,simple reliable, andalways does a good job .. And I can't understandothersbashing the 400 ,, Is my ignorance bliss ?, I doubt it ,My brother plants with them all over the yrears , and will only use certain planters in certain conditions ,,he likes the 800 series best, but helped me to get optimum performance from my 400
