What is the purpose of the curtain on a disc mower? Does it help with the hay cutting or to keep rocks and that sort of thing from flying up.

With no curtain all kinds of debris flies up and at the operator. Dirt, rocks. sticks. fire ants...

You forgot the worst one, cow crap! Clipping pastures with a drum mower, with a worn curtain, is about as bad as spreading sh!t on a windy day!

I have had a disc mower blade somehow come off and stick in a back tractor tire. Without the curtain, it might of been me with the blade stuck in. It did ruin the tire

We don't have fire ants, but many folks around here do spread tobacco stalks on pasture/hay fields. Tobacco stalks sread first of the year get britle and sting like a yellow jacket if you have a worn out curtain.

I patched mine with a piece of rubber belting, I think it works better than the new curtain.

The curtain is also important for the proper vaccum to occur to pull the crop into the cutterbar, otherwise you will not get a good cut. I had a curtain wear alot on my old mower and it was starting to cut real bad. A curtain won't completely prevent certain material from flying forward. It is best to have a cab when using a disk mower.
