Fightin' the furrow!

What needs to be done to have a 450 ih plow straight with a 311 ih fast hitch plow. While plowing, the nose of the narrow front is always moving to the furrow. Basically countersteering the whole time. I do not have a manual for this plow. But I wonder if there are some adjustments to make? The plow has a tail wheel and a depth wheel.

Thanks,

Butch

I don't think there is a lot you cando. The plow is mostle on the rigtht side of the tractor so that is where the draft is. We had somewhat the same with dad's 350 and 3-16 fast hitch plow. Gave the left brake a good workout. You do have the pin out of the sway block so the ploow is fre to swing side to side don't you? If not, that may cause more problems.

Many times you need to adjust the tractor's in furrow wheel to the right distance from the tractor center line to the edge of the tire. That varies with the size of the plow. The on land tire should be set the same in most cases. If the on land wheel is out too far it will push the tractor front towards the furrow.

I have plowed with plows from one bottom to 7 bottoms, and if the plow is adjusted right you shouldn't have that problem. The inside of the
furrow wheel should be about 25 1/2" inches from the center of the tractor for 14 bottoms, 27 1/2"
for 16" bottoms. The onland wheel should be the same.Plow when in the ground should be level front
to back and side to side. Then the plow should be
aimed so it is cutting the front furrow what ever
width its supposed to be 14 or 16" Trial and error
once you start plowing . Ask Hugh McKay on the
Farmall board He would know just what tractor and
plow combination you're talking about.

An owners manual for that plow will explain it in detail, but basically I think that tail wheel needs to be adjusted so that it runs tighter into the landside of the furrow.

I have a 2 bottom Little Genius #8 that apparently was set-up properly long before I ever got it because it pulls easy and I do not ever have to fight the steering wheel on my H.

I do have an owners manual for that plow, and reading through it, I have realized that a mold board plow is a much more complex piece of machinery than what most folks realize.

Butch: I'm with Rusty's idea, get a plow manual and make sure you have a 450 fast hitch manual. Our biggest problem on YT is a lot of folks don't realize how complex a plow is.

Your 450 should handle that plow as easy as you cutting room temperature butter with a hot knife. You shouldn't have to fight those brakes.
