I see most 7' cut and some 8' cut disc mowers are rated fr 40-45 PTO HP,

any one actually use a tractor this size on one?

Cousin uses a 4400 Ford to run a 8 foot disc mower. Works fine and is very manueverable. I drove it a little and it pulled the mower fine and I was used to a 65 hp tractor on a disc mower. Real thick hay would require dropping back a gear. Some disc mowers are easier to pull than others also and some disc mowers are heavy and require a heavier tractor to pull them.

I run a Kuhn GMD 66 7 ft 10 in 3pt disc mower on my Ford 3910, (42 PTO HP)! It's slicker 'n sliced bread, and handy as a shirt pocket!

It should work fine. We ran a PZ230 for years on a 4000 at 52 hp. That was a 7' 10" or so cut I think and it also had a conditioner on it then... so I don't see any reason why the straight mower couldn't be run with 40 hp.
I did some trimming with that mower (no conditioner) using the 3930 at one time and it handled it fine.
I don't think you'd get any blazing speed in a heavy crop, but probably third gear or so...

Get a drum mower, they are lighter, and min hp is rated at 27 hp. I am running mine on an Allis D-12, with one wheel weight on the opposite rear wheel. One cuttin combo, there!

Sounds like should have no problem then?

Mower in question is a Case IH 3206, sales lit I have says 40 PTO HP needed, 7' 10" cut (6 discs)

I have a 2wd Case IH 495 with loaded rear tires (fluid) and 2200 loader mounts on front (would not leave actual loader/bucket on to hay) no front weights.

Seller of mower thought tractor might not be stable when lifting/turning with mower, i.e. lift front end, get tippy so he didn't even recommend it.

I figured at minimum I could get by with it until I got a bigger tractor. Just looking to upgrade from a sickle bar and thought even worst case if I had to run a disc mower at the same speed I'd be mowing a little wider and not plugging at all.

Mower is some distance away so trying it out would be hard.

I USE A FELLA DISC MOWER ON MY 485 CIH.IT IS 7'10''.MY FRONT AND REAR TIRES ARE LOADED.THE TRACTOR HAS OK POWER FOR IT,BUT COULD USE MORE ON MY HILLS.I ALSO PULL A 4X4 ROUND BALER WITH IT.I HAD A 574 WHICH WAS BETTER SUITED WITH POWER,BUT FOUND THIS LOW HOUR 485 WITH A NEW LOADER ON IT.MARK
