You may be able to do it an easier way. If you can get the bill hook out of the knotter, you may be able to slide a pinch washer (not sure of the real name) into the shaft of the knotter stack to take out the end play. I did that and have made it through 3 seasons without pulling the stack completely apart.

I never said pulling the stack apart was required. It's not. A little more clearance makes it easier to re-time the billhook. If it's bound up good and tight right now, giving it more stack endplay is the easiest way to rotate the knotter up to work on it, then it needs to be adjusted tighter than it was before. Like many things, there is more than one way to get it done.

This is probably as a result of excessive knotter stack endplay, as I suggested. You can remove the cap bolt, washer and shims at the right end of the knotter shaft. Loosen the pinch bolt in the needle bail crank arm (the knotter brake disc is bolted to this). Pry the crank arm to the right on the shaft. This will allow enough clearance between the individual knotter and cam gear so you can re-time the billhook. Make sure the solid pin that fastens the billhook to the pinion isn't sheared. Remove enough shims from the knotter stack cap bolt so the knotters almost stay put when unbolted and rotated halfway up from the mount. The cam gears are supposed to float on the shaft so one adjustment takes care of both knotters.
It wouldn't hurt if you spent the $15 or so on an operator's manual.

I ain't gonna be much help here! I had the same problem with the right knotter on my old 315. I ended up pulling the knotter stack apart to get the bill hook back in position. but I haven't put it back together yet! The thing that's most frustrating is "what caused it to get turned around like that anyway"!?!? and "will it happen again"!?!? Bought myself a 570 and that is working great!!! Jim, if you get your 270 back together let me know if it stays together when you start baling! my email is dns eager at my fair point dot net!

There is a pin that holds the bill hook in place.
Once you locate the pin you will need to drive the pin out with a punch. It is a fun experience learning how to move the knotters to get to the various parts since they rotate with the knotters position.

NH knotters have a nut and bolt that hold the knotters in position. It is at the back of the knotter frame. Take that out and you can rotate the individual knotter up to where you can work on it. Sound like maybe a pin sheared off that holds the bill hook to a gear. You may need to replace the bill hook and pin.
