Last year when my 560 blew a gasket, I ran the haybine with an H...took the coupler off the return end, zip tied a sock on, and went cutting hay.....

Josh: You already have a double action cylinder, why bother removing return hose, just plumb it back to your tractor reservoir. Vent plugs are dirty as sooner or later you'll have minor bypass within that cylinder, and all that bypsassed oil exhausts through vented plug. With plumbing back to reservoir you eliminate the mess, plus you don't loose the oil.

You didn't say tractor model however if you have a remote valve with float position, just use float position and that will give float, plus returns bypassed oil to reservoir. Or if it's something like Farmall 300-400, switch the remote valve to single action, and the return hose still runs excess bypassed oil back to reservoir.

Vent plugs are available inexpensive ( with no filter ) or not inexpensive ( with a filter ). Either way they don't cost very much and the ones with a filter will cost much less in the long run! ...Randy

why not use a return hose for a vent plug. i never thought about it before, but if you pushing the rod out you'd be sucking something in through the vent plug unless its filtered you could suck in dirt and ruin the seals on the cylinder.

What application? There are advantages to plumbing a hydraulic ram two way. Even if it's only used single.

I believe the term is single and double acting cylinders. But either way yes you need a vent plug or you will have problems with trapped air and sooner or later trapped oil
