A lot of people held squares too long and for too much money compared to what its worth. The bigger farms can buy really good hay for 200 a ton. Most of whats at 3 bucks is grass thats been wet.

With that said, dont bet the farm on 5.00 square bales. 3.00 hay has been the standard here for a long time. With fuel and fertilizer back down I think we need to plan on 3.00 squares and 25.00 rounds for a long time to come.

At the state Farm Bureau convention I heard an interesting statistic. 40,000 horses a year from the US are going to Mexico for 'horse shows' but none of them are coming back. Make your own judgements. We are apparently at or near the bottom of the cow cycle and are seeing significant herd liquidation. Add to that milk has dropped to half what it was a year ago, we are looking at a massive increase in cow slaughter. Meat supplies are up, slaughter is up, and exports are down. A lot of these acres that used to have cows on them are going to have hay coming off of them.

As to hay supplies, from what I've seen we are looking at an abundance of grass hay in small squares, a shortage of alfalfa in small squares, and a shortage of good rolled hay.

Maybe I got lucky, sold some of my rounds for 40.00 delivered along with 100 idiot cubes for 3.00 delivered to the same cattle farmer. I am now seeing 2.00 smalls and 30.00 rounds for sale, but NOT delivered. DOUG

If cattle prices are low for the producers why are the prices for meat in the super markets so high? What could be going on there? I agree that hay has been priced too high, and has only achieved pushing horse customers out of the market. To me it is doubtful that many/if any will return.

Same with milk, Price of milk hasnt been this low since I can remember, at least back to the early 80s yet its still 3.49 a gallon at the store. Its the old retail markup spread.

People who have horses are getting rid of them. This is causing a glut of hay in some areas. It wouldn't suprise me if hay prices fall next year like everything else.Farmer down the road is reporting slow sales when he usually is getting low this time of year. On a good note I shipped the bale chute out today via UPS.

Yes indeed. This economy has to hurt the horse hay market. Alot of those yuppies are paying the price for their over indulgence.
My customers are still here. As a matter of fact they took in more from people who lost jobs.
I see lots of adds for free to good home horses.

Not me... I never understood having a horse. just a big hay burner you cant eat.

I'm with you there. I never did understand the horse thing. My neighbor tells me how valuable his horse is - he has been offered $10,000 for it, but he won't part with it, because it's like part of the family.

Heck, for $10,000, I'd even deliver it!

They are getting rid of them any way they can, taking them up into national forest and just letting them go, boarders abandoning them at the stables, taking them out to the very rural parts of the county and just letting them loose, giving them away where possible, dropping them off at livestock sale barns under false names. I heard that one boarder here shot and buried 6 horses becasue his boarders just abandoned them and he couldnt even give the horses away. You name it people are doing whatever they can to get rid of horses. The scenarios i mentioned above i cannot confirm they are whats being said at the local diner.

All thanks to the wonderful animal rights nut jobs getting the ban on the slaughter of horses.

Out here in the west branding horses was the norm, now people are no longer branding so ownership can't be traced, when the horse is turned loose on federal land.
