A lot of people held squares too long and for too much money compared to what its worth. The bigger farms can buy really good hay for 200 a ton. Most of whats at 3 bucks is grass thats been wet. With that said, dont bet the farm on 5.00 square bales. 3.00 hay has been the standard here for a long time. With fuel and fertilizer back down I think we need to plan on 3.00 squares and 25.00 rounds for a long time to come. At the state Farm Bureau convention I heard an interesting statistic. 40,000 horses a year from the US are going to Mexico for 'horse shows' but none of them are coming back. Make your own judgements. We are apparently at or near the bottom of the cow cycle and are seeing significant herd liquidation. Add to that milk has dropped to half what it was a year ago, we are looking at a massive increase in cow slaughter. Meat supplies are up, slaughter is up, and exports are down. A lot of these acres that used to have cows on them are going to have hay coming off of them. As to hay supplies, from what I've seen we are looking at an abundance of grass hay in small squares, a shortage of alfalfa in small squares, and a shortage of good rolled hay.
