Have always had variable speed but the machine I am looking at doesnt have it. Is it a big deal for corn and beans? I use it every now and then now but not sure if its necessary. What do you guys think?

oops! I am referring to a variable speed header drive. It does have the hydrostatic transmission but no variable speed header drive. Sorry for the confusion.

Many combines do not have a variable speed header drive. It's OK but not necessary, and more recently has become standard. My 1480 doesn't have it and I've been able to harvest corn/beans and wheat for many years. If you want this option it will be a newer and probably quite an expensive machine. Not many if any on this forum are in this market.

They tell me its because they were using a chopping corn head. It was supposed to be standard on this model (9790 massey) but they ordered it without so they could demo the chopping head.

I would think any combine running corn would have v/s on the feeder house. Although, if just running 6 or 8 row head, you will probably not really need it as you will be running it as fast as you can anyway. Those 9790's will eat it faster than you can feed it.

they were telling me that they really couldnt add it unless they basically parted out one with it on. Big $$$.

Hadn't heard of a combine without variable...

Dad bought a different tractor for the old pull type, to have 10 gears instead of 5.

Who'd make a combine without variable speed?

Spitz, What the heck are you looking at ? The first combine I can remember is an AC 100 and it had a variable speed system, like wise JD 45, Massey 300, Gleaner A, Case 600, IH 101.

Good for the same reason as a hydro in a combine....ability to keep the combine running at capacity. Cleaner sample in the bin when machine is performing as intended, full.
