ClemBert, your pictures of your sprayer showed your black board fences in the background. They REALLY look good! Can you tell us what kind of wood you used and how do you stain them black? How often do they need to be restained/painted?

i use to do that used oil thing too. its a bad thing for the enviroment. most fences are along ditches and the oil will run off in to them and from there to the rivers.

i painted my neighbors fence for her and we used big nap rollers and clamped paint brushes to old mop handles to keep from having to do all that bending over and crawling around on our knees. seems like we had one bucket and one brush just for painting down against the ground. that way we kept the other paint buckets clear of trash.

TSC sells a black fence coating that is asphalt based. I just bought some to redo my board fences in the spring. If I recall it runs around $30 a 5 gallon bucket. We"ve lived at the place we"re at now for 5 years and to my knowledge the fences haven"t been painted in over 10 years and still look black from a distance.

just curious if the paint is made up of roofing tar and thinned to mop on ease with kero. the use to make a tire black that was black paint mixed with kero and it stayed black a long time.

Back in the 1960's some Black fellas came thru Taylor and Marion Co's in Ky.selling a solution of black paint cut with Kerosene and went from Farm to Farm Airless Spraying Barns ,Fences and any thing they could talk you into. Most out Bldgs in that area were built with rough cut White Oak and the Paint really spruced up some of those old Barns etc and it lasted a long time. Even now you can go to my Uncles former farm and some of the out buildings are still showing Black Paint .This after 40 some years of Kentucky weather. However the place I was born at near Merrimac Ky in 1937 has a small Barn constructed from the Lumber my Dad built his barn out of in 1937,rough sawn White Oak, and the Lumber is still solid and is still weathered grey. The old Barn would be still standing if they had not let the Hogs run loose and root around all the Posts causing them to collapse.

Thats probably the most common fence in this area for horse fences, 4 plank, black, with bat boards. 6 inch faced half posts on 8 foot centers, 1x6 white oak or treated poplar 16 feet long. Cut two boards to 8 feet when starting and that staggers the fence for strength. 4 foot long batboads over the posts. Strong, long lasting, and looks great. We use an acrylic black fence coating sold locally in 5 gallon pails for 22.50 each. I normally get mine painted along with my barns every 10 years. One of the advantages to the particular paint is it doesnt peel like a latex would so you dont have to scrape or otherwise deal with.
