There is a brand new bush hog for sale that apparently was not filled with grease when sold. Would anyone guess what would be involved with rebuilding the box. I do not know how long it was run before they realized it. They said it is not locked up.

Put grease in it and try it first.

I bought a new King Kutter rotary mower about 8 years ago. I knew that I needed to put oil in the gearbox but I forgot anyway. I ran it for over a round in the field before I thought of it. I filled it up and it works perfect to this day. There must have been a little assembly oil in there that helped out.

If you feel any roughness at all when tuerning by hand. Or if any noise/vibration occurs at all while operational. Tear the gearbox down. You don"t want all that metal whirling without proper support, just 8ft away from yourself.

thta nothing unusual at ALL.I assemble new stuff and majority of them gear boxes are all shipped empty, doesn't make any difference what its on. Turn the unit by hand.see what it does. If it turns okay and doesn't feel rough use some JD corn head gear box grease in it and go. I put that in all the old old units if they leak and customer does not want new seal kit use that grease instead and it will run for years.

Add grease, run it till it smokes everything, put in a new gear box from agrisupply. Of course, it would be most helpful to make sure that they stock the right gearbox in the first place!

Price a new gearbox as your worst case. Anything you save from that is gravy. You won't know for sure till you tear it down. A shaft could be welded to the bearings, gears can be junk. or, I've seen a set of seals and bearings fix them up fine. Some complete boxes are more cost effective than their guts.

If not locked up, would fill with gear lube and see where it leaks out after running it. I have a JD "bush hog" that has had baler twine and WIRE wrapped around the spindle, the seal is compromised. It will get noisy if it starts getting low on 85-140. If not leaking excess, fill it and run. DOUG

just for grins look under the bottom to see if its coated with oil. could be a bad seal and all the oil leaked out. i can't imagine bush hog putting something out that didn't have oil in it, but s--- happens. i'm with the other guy. take the fill plug out and any inspection plates you can and looked to see how much blueing in there you can find.

It's common to ship machines without oil to avoid leaking. A lot of dealers don't seem to think they should have to prep machines before they sell them. It must take money out of their pockets. Dave

At the very least, a full gasket and shim kit. All bearings should be replaced, hopefully that is all that was damaged. If the gear set has spalling or heat marks, then a gear set as well... May be cheaper to buy a new gear box if all the above is damaged. If you get it for $350 then buy a $400 gear box you have about $750 in it now. A new one (Bush Hog Squealer) will run $1100 - $1350... Look in to it and check back.

Charles, are you from or live in Louisianna? Do you have any relatives near Elmer?
