Hey folks,
I posted this on tractor talk when I should have put it here...

I'm considering removing the sickle mower from my tractor and have a couple of questions.
1) Can the gearbox (??) that runs the mower be used for anything else that would warrant leaving it mounted, or should I just go ahead and pull it also?

2)My tractor is a 3 cyl diesel about the size of an 8N with 26 HP. How much drum mower could I handle? Those things are all over ebay for cheap and every one of my neighbors has one (just need to know what size to look for). Other part of this ?? would be: is a drum mower dummy proof to use and do they do a good job and how much maintenance is involved?

Thanks for any input,

Dave

I use a drum mower from cc machinery.I have a 35 hp tractor and use a 65" cut mower.Cuts as good and fast as any mower at a realistic price.Wouldn't even consider a used one for the price of new.weight is a factor with machinery hanging off the side,so the weght of your tractor is as important as the hp. check belt tension replace blades(a snap).Trouble free really, but "nothing is foolproof in the hands of a fool".I know...... .I can break an anvil.

Look at the HayMAXX T-135 drum mower. It is smaller than the 165 drum mower. You need 20 PTO HP and tractor weight of minimum of 2700 Lbs.If your tractor is a little light fill the tires.

I got a used drum mower this year, and I love it! 6 foot cut, which is less than my sickle haybine, but man, you can go so much faster! They're not foolproof, but they're pretty rugged. I can go as fast as I can stand. And it cuts just as low as a sickle. Maybe lower.

I don't think your current tractor would handle it, though. I think you have the classic case of not enough tractor. Like the other poster's tractor, I think you need 35 hp minimum. My JD 5303 is 55hp on the PTO, and I don't think I'd want less for this cutter. There is no such thing as "too much" power!

My tractor is 5' wide, 10' long, and ways 3000# +/- a little. I'll probably just try a couple of the neighbors' and see what works (which one to borrow  )

Thanks, Dave

Hay Dr
You guys have financing on those things?
Also shipping?
Cant find a vendor any where near Minnesota. No one has even heard of Drum mowers around here.
Got the tedder last year and now need to cut hay at 6am. Sickle mower is not going to do that.

Has to do with my day job. They have me working the 9:30 am to 6 pm shift.
So if I am going to cut. I ether have to take a day off, have the neighbor do it or get out there earlier.
9:30 to 6 is a stupid shift. Only get 8 hrs but sure ruins the whole day.
