I just got a plow for a friend yesterday and it has curved blade coulters like a disk and scrapers where normal straight blade coulters would be. The stampings are all good and the blades each have their own greasable hub. The disks are set at a little angle. I've never seen this or seen a plow with this but next summer I guess I will. Does anyone know any more about these and what the advantage would be?

The JD rolling spring cushion coulters that came on the 1350=1450 plows were the best. I have used them on IHC, oliver and JD plows. The hub on the 3rd bottom of the plow above is what is on mine. A #60 plow has the flat bar beams so the flat bar mounting shanks work on it. I wanted to keep my #60 all IHC so I don't have the spring cushion coulters on it. Plowing is an art and there are so many things that go into making a plow stay in the ground, cover trash good, make even level furrows and pull easy. Every type of plow bottom has a speed that they work best at, depth of furrow makes a big dirrerence. If a disk coulter is set right it will keep a plow pulling straight. If to deep it will make it pull sideways. I had a 110 horse JD powershift 4240 that I could pull a 5-18" 1350=1450 JD plow in 5th gear at 5.5 miles an hour with, all day long and not even make it grunt. The plow was perfect at that speed and 7" deep. A lot of people around here said JD plows pulled hard, that plow pulled easier than both an Oliver or IHC plow at that setting....James

Boy, that is a sharp #15.

There are disk coulters around SD. They worked well when they worked. But, the complaints I have heard were they could push the plow to the left, and/or ride the plow out of the ground. And they also couldn't take rocks very well. Even the spring relief coulters would break the shank or the arm.

Nice looking # 16, I have a #60 with the flat bar mounting instead of the round one. They were an option with the #60. The rolling disk blade coulters make a plow pull easier than a plow with coverboards and cover just a well or better. My Farmall H pulls 2-16's in 3rd gear with this setup....James

They are called Disk Colter Jointers and were made by IH and others. They work kinda like a cover board. I like them and they work good for covering trash. If this works this is my No. 15 plow with the disk jointers.

Those are the same Yetter coulters that I have had for years.

That #15 is the exact plow we just purchased. That was the identification I was looking for. Thanks for the pic. Very nice plow.

My deere F45 4 bottom had the curved plow coulters. Primary use was in sandy soil along the easter coast, kept trash to the right as well.

Yetter and M&W each made aftermarket curved disk plow openers. Probably others that also made them as well. They were supposed to eliminate the need for cover boards.Didn't work very well if the soil got hard and dry. They tended to ride the plow right out of the ground.

Yetter was a very popular disc blade type coulter, arm only on left side. Then THC had one simular except it had a spring relief feature so that if a rock got in it would not jamb like the yetter. Ran the yetters for 40 years and set corectly they would plow stalks and trash that no other coulter would. Then there was the Lantz coulter that had 2 blades, one running straight like the normal swinging coulter plus anouther that ran setting on an angle with the two blades touching at the front to do the same thing as the curved disk blades on the others.

Valleyview: I bought a new IH plow in 1975 and at the time was plowing corn stalks yearly. Those coulters as an option did enter discussion between myself and dealer. The only item different with those is the actual coulter blade. It can be taken off and a straight blade installed. Those coulter hubs were used on all IH plows of that era.

Like Paul, I think they may have a benefit in some trash covering conditions. I didn't buy them in 75. I had already devised my own on farm solution to plowing down corn stalks.

Can cover cornstalks or other heavy trash a little better in some conditions. Was a popular option on JD plows; didn't know others had it too.
