Bush Hog Lubricant

I should have included this in my post above. What is the normal lubricant used in the transmissions of most bush hogs? Should it be level with the fill plug?
Thanks again

i'd use 140 weight gear oil. i have an older one and i just fill it to where it cover the gears. i also drilled a very small hole in the fill plug on the side of the nut that ffaces down when the nut is tight to act like a breather for the gear box. been that way now for 10 years and haven't blown the seals out of it yet.

If your oil leaks out, fill it almost full of heavy grease. My seven footer has been going strong for over seven years on grease and it's been worked hard.

i used to use 85W-90 gear oil, but now that the bottom shaft seal is leaking i just pump some grease into the gearbox. no problems so far and it sure saves a lot of work replacing that bottom shaft seal.

I would take an old fools advice don't use all grease. The gears will tunnel a hole in the grease and fail to lubricate the gears.

...as the bearings heat up, the grease melts some and provides lubrication. Then you pump in more grease. "You're mileage may vary".

On the newer one (not a leaker) I use 85-90 gear oil. I also have an old Brillion that leaked even with a new bottom seal. On that one I use Corn Head grease and a little gear oil to keep things slushing around. So far so good.

I use 140wt in all my mowers: 720 FTH, 720 ATH, 6" Corsicana, and the JD #5s .

Also use Corn Head grease in those that leak a bit.

Find an oil dis that handles double 00 grease, buy it by the 5 gal a lot cheeper the same grease snapper mowers use in the gear boxes. It won't tunnel out and you can pour it.

When the bottom seal goes bad, I drill a hole for a grease fitting between the upper and lower bearings, tap it, and insert a grease fitting, and fill her up with good grease. Top end still gets 85W140 gear oil. the beauty of this system is that the leak eventually slows or stops, and since the grease fitting is midway between the 2 main bearings in the case, they both get grease!
