Henry backhoe on a 1957 Deere 420U.

S-555A "Cup Seals". Where do I get such a thing?
There are two per diversion valve. I have two such valves.

Thanks Gary, great link.
Not all that friendly to navigate but they probably have what I need.

An adventure.

Yep the have the u cup in every size imaginable.

Measure the size you need and give them a call.

Measure the shaft where it rests and the inside bore on the cylinder before you call.

Thanks again for the concise info.

I think I'll remove and disassemble the thing so I can clean it up and measure. I have two (one for each outrigger) and one doesn't do anything. The one that does work drips oil about a drop a second.

Oil ain't cheap. As the Henry backhoe's whole base is the stabilizer there's usually no need to use the outriggers and I'm not doing much heavy digging right now.

I like to post pics and outcome in hopes it helps somebody down the road.
I took the leaky valve off and cleaned it up. Upon disassembly, I found this:

No cup seals but O-rings and the shaft is pitted. i suppose I have no choice but to try new rings but I suspect the thing will still leak due to the pitting. I'll try polishing the pits out but all advice appreciated.

Oh, one more thing, is teflon tape a "no no" in hydraulic systems?

Thanks

Paul

Maybe if you replace the o-rings with the correct u cup seals it will hold oil better than the o-rings.

Remember to put the opened side of the u cup to the pressure. then pressure will open up the seal more for a tighter fit.

The pits in the shaft will not cause a leak but pits in the cylinder may. The shaft only seals at the seals themselves. Pits will not hurt a thing.

Ah, so it's not that the valve itself has been replaced, just O-rings instead of the right cup seals.

It's going to look pretty silly when I put it back on the machine but I'll get it all the same color eventually....

Hang on.

Now that I've looked back at the pics in this thread, I see the shaft is different from the one depicted in the manual (first image above).

On the one I have in hand, there is only one groove and the O-rings were not on the shaft but in a pair of grooves in the bore.

I guess i have to assume then that i need O-rings and the valve has been replaced at some point. Visually, the old ones seem fine but obviously the oil was getting past them. I'll try to polish the bore and replace the rings.
