Do I Really Need That Diverter?

I'm sure this will sound like a silly question.
Though I'm new to THIS forum, I've responded to many seemingly silly questions from neophytes on other sites so be nice please.

I am a new and quite proud owner of a JD420 with Henry FEL and Backhoe.
I have to select either implement to operate using a diverter valve.

Is there a reason for this, or could I remove the thing and just operate
whichever implement I need at the moment?

With all these leaks, removing THAT inconvenience would make for a few less I expect.

Doesn't that diverter allow oil to return at all times no matter which way it is directed.

Just wondering.

I thinking the FEL and the Hoe both have separate open center hydraulic valves. If so then you probably can't remove the diverter.

If both valves are hooked to the same hyd line, then if you try to operate, say the bucket, the oil will just go thru the hoe valve unresticted, back to sump and not get action at the bucket.

Ah. I'll take a close look at the lines (as I seek leaks) but what you both say makes sense.

Thanks Much.
