So I went to go spread a little salt on the bales that I put up last weekend this evening at the barn I rent about 2 miles down the road. Turns out the kids of the non-farming family that owns the place had decided to build forts with my hay...and in the process had also taken apart a bunch of my bales..... argh!
I guess I'll have to be more clear with the parents about having the kids NOT climb on the bales....

Chris

Remove the value of the broken bales from your rent payment and spell it out concisely on a invoice/purchase order. That will drive home the point.

Hehehe, yeah I know. I wish I had the money to build my own barn....and I wish I had enough bales so they could tear them up and it wouldn"t matter!

Yea, this 50 year old fart remembers being a kid on a dairy farm. I had a lot of fun with my brothers and neighbor kid play'n in the hay mow. Seems better for a country kid to play in a hay loft them a boy stuck in a city joining a gang.
We don't know how luck we got it.

Wish I had a big old barn for my boys and grand boys to play in. All I got is round bale for them to jump on. Not as much fun.

i feel for ya, but kids will be kids, and kids will build hay forts, man i hand't even thought about that in 30 years, we used to do that too when we were kids, of coure it was grandpa.s hay in his hay mow and for his stock, we used dried cow chips for ammo one time made a heck of a mess up there, but grandpa was a fair man and did things fairly, when all the finger pointing was done as to who's idea it was to use the cow chips, grandpa used his belt on all of us!

I don't know what your rented barn situation is, but when I was a kid when the haymows got FULL there was no empty space to move bales to. The edge of the mow was unreachable and the top was up by the roof. If your hay is stored at floor level it's a different story. Maybe the answer is fill'er up.

We made forts and had skirmishes many times in the hay mow. Never broke any bales, but since most were were going to be fed on-site it wouldn't have been any great crisis. Occasionally sold a few bales that may have seen some "action" and nobody complained. Actually good clean fun, but the injury liability would be a concern.

I was a kid once and I didn't totally understand the concept of how someone else's property was inside MY property. SO, basically I did what I wanted with the property seeing as it was sitting on MY property.

That's how a kid's brain works. Monkey see, monkey frickin' do.

You don't really think that talking to the parents is going to stop their kids from making a mess of your hay bales, do you? Don't bet on it, unless they give you permission to lock the place up, with your locks. And, even then, kids will find a way to get in there, just to spite you! Best to build yer own barn! kids will sit and scheme about how to thwart you and get inside! How do i know this? HMMM?? I was a kid once!
